Buying Domain Names

Registering Domain Names

Domain names are unique addresses that can be used online. The domain name consists of two parts, the top level domain and the actual name. For instance, in abc.com, .com is the top level domain and abc is the actual name. There are country specific top level domains, such as .uk for United Kingdom and .fr for France. If a domain name is used in a web address, "www" is put in front of it to specify that typing the name into your web browser will take you the website. If you have a domain name, you can set up a website with that address. You can even use it for email addresses. Check out the search engine below to see if the name you want is available!

How The Domain Name Works

Computers that are connected to the internet have a unique Internet Protocol (IP). The IP address has four sets of numbers. You need to know the IP address of your computer to connect it to the internet. However, it is difficult to remember the number, so domain names are used. The domain name system translates the domain name entered into the browser into the appropriate IP address. This is done automatically, so you need not worry about it. Domain names make up the address of your site and can end in .com, .org, .biz, .info and so on.
Registering a Domain Name

Domain name registration is essential in building your website. Registering a domain name is very easy and can be cost effective depending on who you register with. A variety of registrars are available online. The cost of registration differs from company to company. The minimum period of registration is one year. You can renew the domain name after a year. Sometimes, you may be able to enjoy the flexibility of registering domain name for every 3, 5 or 10 years. Domain name registration for a long term can help you reduce your annual registration fees.

Some Important Aspects of Domain Name Registration
While registering domain names, you need to maintain their quality. Quality domains gain recognition easily, as they have the ability to attract visitors to the website they represent.

It is often better to keep your domain name short, so that people can remember the name easily. A short name also reduces the possibility of errors when they type the name into the web browser. Long, difficult to remember and complicated domain names may increase the chance of losing potential website visitors.

It is also important to keep your domain name relevant to the content you wish to publish on your website. If you are selling any product or offering service, you can choose a name that is relevant to the nature of that product or service. This can help you draw more numbers of targeted audiences to your site.

Before completing domain name registration, you need to check the spelling of the name for any errors. Once registered, it is extremely difficult to change the spelling of the domain name.

The location of your website is recorded, after the domain names are registered. Hence, it can be found, when someone types your domain name in a web browser. Registering multiple domain names can help you get significant benefits. The best way to promote your business is to submit your site to various search engines. Re-submitting your site to the search engines cannot help it appear more. You can register more than one domain name, so that you can have more chances of having a surfer click on the link to your site. It may also be a good idea to hire an SEO company to help you with the process. We have SEO Services if you're interested.

Some malicious people may register your general name with a different top level domain for unethical purposes. This will cause great damage to your business and to the goodwill of your organization. Registering your domain name with the .net, .org, and even .co versions can help you protect your business or product name. Early on it may not be too concerning, but as your business grows this could give you serious problems.

The domain name is your online identity and it impacts the perception of your targets. If you have a relevant domain, most of the popular search engines will give you a higher search ranking. Choosing a country specific top level domain often gives your targets a confidence to buy from you. Of course, the .com ending is a very popular top level generic domain.

Domain Name Selection

What Are the Best Domain Names

There are many factors to consider when choosing the best domain name. Here are a few guidelines to use when selecting one:

1) Keep it as short as possible. This may be difficult because so many of the best domain names are taken already, but if you really search hard for a good, short domain name you will find one. Definitely refrain from having more than three words, two is much better than three but most of the two word domains are taken.

2) Have it be reflective of the industry you are in. If you are selling shoes, your domain name should be somewhat reflective of that. A domain name like www.crazygreenbags would not help you at all for shoe sales.

3) Don't be limited by tunnel vision. zappos.com sells shoes and they have made a fortune. If you cannot find a domain name that is close to your industry, look into getting a domain name that is both marketable and engaging, zappos is both of these.

4) A domain name is very important, figure out what keywords you wish to rank for before registering your domain name. Then see if you can find domain names to match your target keywords.

Domain Name Registration

There are many different places to get your domain name registered. I have personally used the big boys like Go Daddy and Network Solutions. Personally, I enjoyed Go Daddy more and found them to have great customer service. Some of the smaller companies have great domain name service as well and have cheaper prices.
