Bathroom Cleaning Tips
Hard water stain removal from chrome
Using harsh chemicals on a shiny surface, such as chrome, can cause etching and tiny scratches in the surface. These tiny scratches then attract future build up. To restore chrome to its original shine, use a peroxide based cleaner or a paste of baking soda and dish detergent. Apply the cleaner to the chrome and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Rinse with clean water. To make cleaning a little easier in the future, you may want to consider getting a water softener.
Cleaning shower curtain
Here is a quick and easy way to remove soap film from plastic shower curtains. Place several large bath towels in the washing machine along with the shower curtain. Add 1/2 cup vinegar. Remove curtain before the spin cycle and hang immediately. Soaking shower curtains in salt water will prevent them from mildew.
Grout mould and mildew removal
Remove mold and mildew by cleaning with a dilute solution of chlorine bleach in water (one cup bleach to 3 cups water, increasing the bleach as necessary). Spray or sponge it on, wait a few minutes, then rinse well with clean water. Commercial mildew remover sprays can also be used. Be sure to wear rubber gloves and rinse the area well after cleaning.
Lime and mineral deposits removal
You can remove lime and other mineral deposits by using a commercial cleaner that contains organic acids, designed specifically for this purpose (stay away from products that contain hydrochloride salts). For a homemade alternative, try making a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide or cream of tartar and white vinegar. Scrub the paste lightly into the stain and allow to dry. Rinse thoroughly and buff dry.
Sink and toilet porcelain stain removal
To remove stains from porcelain sinks, tubs or toilets, make a paste of cream of tartar and hydrogen peroxide. Let the paste sit on the stain for an hour, then lightly scrub it off. Toilet bowl stain removal
To clean tough toilet bowl stains, Bar Keepers Friend is great on rust stains, but you can also try adding a cup of bleach to the toilet water and letting it sit for 15 minutes, then flush. If the stain is not deep into the carpet, an alternative is to snip away the stained edges with fine manicure scissors or a razor blade. Use tweezers to pull out the severely stained fibers and discard. Remove clean carpet strands from another, hidden area in the room. Apply glue to the stained area, and press the clean fibers into the spot. Press the area with a heavy object for several days before walking on it.
Carpet spot
If a spot on carpet is wet, blot it, don´t rub. Rubbing spreads the soil. If a spot is dry, loosen then vacuum the excess dirt away prior to moistening it. Always rinse the cleaned area thoroughly. If not removed, cleaning products may cause the cleaned area to attract soil.
Chocolate stain

Flour paste
To remove dried flour paste, first vacuum vigorously to remove as much of the paste as possible. You should then be able to clean up what is left by making a very sudsy solution with your favorite detergent and warm water. Use only the suds and brush them onto the spot, first vertically, then horizontally. Blot up excess liquid, and place a towel and a couple of heavy books on top of the spot to absorb moisture. Leave overnight, then vacuum as usual.
Petrol Stain
To remove a petrol stain from your carpet, treat the stain with a mixture of one teaspoon each of vinegar (to remove the odour) and mild dish detergent (to clean the carpet) in a quart of warm water. Let the carpet dry, and if any spot remains, you may need to repeat. If this does not seem to be working, try using dry-cleaning solvent.
Glue stain
To remove glue from carpeting, first I would recommend a vigorous vacuuming to remove as much of the paste as possible. Wax Stain
To remove wax from carpet, first chip off as much of the surface wax as possible, using a butterknife or credit card. Then, place several layers of paper towel over remaining wax, and apply a warm iron to draw wax into the paper towels. Replace the paper towels if they become saturated. Hair Dye Stain
Unfortunately, hair dye can rarely be thoroughly removed from carpet as it permanently alters the carpet´s color. However, there are several steps you can try. First, try blotting the stain with rubbing alcohol. If that doesn´t work, try blotting the stain with a solution of 1/4 cup liquid hand dishwashing detergent per cup of warm water. Remove clean carpet strands from another, hidden area in the room. Apply glue to the burned area, and press the clean fibers into the spot. Press the area with a heavy object for several days before walking on it.
Shampoo Spill Stain
There´s no quick solution to cleaning up a shampoo spill from carpet. Use water and a clean white cloth and keep blotting the area until the shampoo seems to be out. Don´t rub the area or you risk damaging the carpet fibers and don´t overwet the area or you run the risk of causing mold and mildew to form. You may want to rent a carpet steam cleaning machine from your local supermarket or home store (use it without a cleaner - just plain water) or hire a professional.

If this doesn´t work, or if the stain is older, you can try using a commercial carpet stain remover. You could also try dabbing with turpentine, then sponging with cold water, but try this in a small area first, to test for color-fastedness.
Plaster Stain
The best way to remove the plaster from your carpet would be to allow it to dry thoroughly. Chip off as much of the dried plaster as possible, and vaccuum. To repair a cigarette burn in your carpet, snip away the singed edges with fine manicure scissors or a razor blade. Use tweezers to pull out the severely burned fibers and discard.
Soft Drink Stain
To remove a soft drink stain from your carpet, mix 1 teaspoon liquid dishwashing detergent with 1 cup lukewarm water. Follow up with 1 tablespoon of ammonia in 1/2 cup of water.
Nail Polish Stain
You can get fingernail polish off carpet by applying either dry-cleaning fluid or nail polish remover. To ensure that this is safe for your particular carpet, test the product on a hidden area first.
Another method is to combine 1/4 cup hydrogen peroxide with 1 tablespoon of ammonia. Dab it on with a towel until the area is saturated. Then, take a piece of plastic wrap and put it down on the spot and cover with a stack of heavy books. Let sit overnight. Rinse well in the morning.
Oil Paint Stain
You should be able to remove the stain by dabbing the area with a paper towel to remove any paint possible, then treat the area with a carpet shampoo.
You may need to repeat this process in order to remove as much plaster as you can. To remove the residue left after vaccuuming, try treating the area with dry cleaning solution, or a commercial carpet cleaning product.
