How to create a Stamped DOMINO Pendant

As you can see from my scrabble tile pendant lens, I love to create altered art jewelry from game tiles/pieces!

In this tutorial I will show you step by step how to create a lovely stamped domino pendant.

The dominoes provide a little larger surface to create on than the scrabble tiles but both are fun, interesting conversation pieces and great gifts! I was recently in an art swap and made 16 of them!...they are lightweight, a great conversation piece, unique and artsy!

We'd be thrilled if you'd Favorite It!

Upcycling a domino game tile into an altered art pendant!

Before the Etsy Scrabble Tile Pendant craze, artists were creating altered art pendants from vintage domino game tiles, it's easy and here's how you can create a great gift or turn a new hobby into a business!

Supplies Needed:
* faux ivory or white domino game tiles
* smallest eye screw or aanraku bails
* favorite rubber/acrylic stamps
* ink stamp pad(s)
* blending chalks
* Envirotex or Diamond Glaze clear finish resin
* clear petri dish with lid or glass
* Popsicle stick
* old clean paint brush
* favorite chain or black cording
* drinking straw
* drill & 1/16 drill bit
* piece of felt approx 2" x 3"
* access to a vice grip

***see aanraku bails in ebay module below...you could skip the drilling and just glue a bail on back!...soooo easy!

Step One "drilling": I wrap my dominoes in the small piece of felt to prevent scratching from the vice grip.

Place in grip firmly and using your 1/16th drill bit, drill a hole the depth of the eye screw (screw part only not the eye part) into the top of the domino...have a stash of dominoes on hand for this craft cause there will be "mistakes"... "chips"... "do-overs" etc :o)

Granted all goes well with your drilling, lets move on to step 2..."stamping"

With your ink pad, the drilled domino, and your favorite rubber or acrylic stamps...either ink your stamp or stamp your ink (depending on your belief...I do both)

Stamp the blank side of the domino being careful not to smudge the image, however...if it doesn't turn out to your satisfaction the stamped image is easily washed away with water & dry fully with old towel.
Try again if necessary.

If you image doesn't fully cover domino (like mine shown)...you can add filigree or floral vine type stamped edges...I think this is a nice finishing touch.

Allow a few minutes for ink to air dry. Note: won't be fully smudge proof until resin is on and dry...so careful when applying chalk colors.

Step 3 "chalking": In the "supplies" photo I show one of those chalk applicators but I find it's better to apply chalk colors with an old paint brush as shown in 2nd photo below.

Depending on your image you will choose your colors accordingly. I like the face image, so I applied some rouge to her cheeks and lips...and a little vintage green to the filigree edges for a unique aged look.

When applying chalk, generously dab on color, blow excess off, apply gently to stamped domino.
TIP: If chalk crumbles off in clumps, when dabbing with brush also blow gently and excess will blow off.

Step 4 "resin":

You are now ready to apply resin. Now, as mentioned in my scrabble tile lens, I have access to a 2 step product called Envirotex, same end result as Diamond Glaze but in my opinion, a messier process.

Follow any mixing directions, drying times etc. found on your bottle of resin...I choose to spread my mixed 2 step resin with a Popsicle stick. Careful around edges, wipe any drips from sides.

Once a nice even layer of resin is spread, take your drinking straw and blow out any air bubbles. Careful not to over do this process, moisture from your mouth will gather in the straw and we don't want to blow drips of saliva onto the resin (if you do it's not the end of the world...lick a finger & gently smear saliva off resin, apply more resin if necessary, smooth out and get a dry straw) :o)

Place resin coated domino art in a craft or petri dish with lid, under a glass is also good...this is to keep any floating dust particles off (and believe me they're out there!) ;o)

After required drying time (Envirotex is 48+ hrs)...apply your eye screw. These can be purchased at any hardware store, I recommend the smallest one you can find. Take a domino with you to the store to be sure.

Last step "finishing":

Add delicate silver chain or black cording to finish your necklace! Your done! Congrats! Great to give as a gift or create a little pendant business!
