Old School Disco, Soul, and Rhythm & Blues Music From the 70s, 80s, 90s. Music Videos, Soul Train Interviews, and History

Soul Train Revisited :: Tribute To Don Cornelius Plus Video Showcase

Are you a music lover? Did you dig the 70s as much as I did? Groovy! This lens is for me and you. I danced my share of Soul Train Lines, electric slides, and whatever else that was all the rage. And I couldn't wait for Don Cornelius to let loose with that smooth, silky voice ...

So in honor of the good times he made possible, the hip-shakin' rhythms of the Soul Train Dancers, and all the talent that rocked the stage, I'm pulling together this lens. Soul Train Revisited :: Tribute To Don Cornelius Plus Video Showcase. It includes music videos, interview with celebrities of the time, and memorabilia from the 70s and 80s. The music showcased is disco, funk, rhythm and blues (R&B), soul, and a little old-school rap (the Kurtis Blow kind!).

But I'm no expert ... I'll need your help! Feel free to jump in and share your favorites from the era. Point me in the direction of great stuff that ought to be added here. And don't forget to vote, vote, vote! Add me to your lensroll and let the good times roll (again)!

Fond Memories and Memorable Quotes About Soul Train

What Were People Saying?

Chancellor of Soul
"My fondest memories of Soul Train are waking up in the morning, rushing to the TV set in the living room and turning to Channel 5 at 11:00 AM, anticipating for my favorite artists to appear and seeing the kids, dance to the latest releases."

Don Cornelius Interviews Up and Coming Artists

They Were Hot!

To be interviewed by Mr. Don Cornelius on his weekly Soul Train production was big stuff.

If you were an up-and-coming artist or group, visibilty on Soul Train was a desirable career booster. Not only did an interview give musicians and singers an opportunity to sell more records, and book more gigs, it gave Soul Train's diverse viewing audience an up-close-and-personal glimpse into the people behind the party.

Don Cornelius didn't constrain his famous interviews to the music world: his interviewees included persons from different walks of life who had achieved celebrity status (or would after he talked with them on his show) in whatever field of endeavor they engagaed. For example, and I just discovered this while doing research for this lens, Mr. Cornelius interviewed a young Al Sharpton, who went on to achieve celebrity status as a minister and social justice advocate. (You can see Sharpton in the video above in the section, Mr. Soul Himself.)

Here are some of those famous interviews.

* Vonetta McGee Interviewed by Don Cornelius on Soul Train
* Ike & Tina Turner Interview
* Al Green interviewed by Don Cornelius on Soul Train
* Teena Marie interviewed by Don Cornelius on Soul Train

Enjoy!

R.I.P. Celebrity Musicians and Superstars Interviewed By Don Cornelius on Soul Train

When They Were Here, He Interviewed Them

Before they passed on, they passed through Soul Train.

They blessed us with their creativity, energy, and love for the performing arts. Each one a musical genius in his or her own right, they will not be forgotten in our lifetimes, and probably not in the next.

I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show

Soul Train wasn't on 24-7 . . .

Two of my favorite shows during the 1970s was I Love Lucy and The Lucy Show. Ricky had a different kind of rhythm and Lucy could really play him like a badly tuned guitar!

Here's a funny episode from I Love Lucy: Lucy's Botched Home Movie. Enjoy!

Entertaining Vintage Collectibles on eBay (Maybe Some Soul Train Memorabilia)

Have a little fun acquiring what you want

I simply love the notion of bartering, haggling, bargaining, and making a deal. Bidding on stuff is the next best thing to such an engaging face-to-face encounter. I spent last summer learning how to really be an eBayer, and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I sold quite a bit of techie stuff like hard drives and routers and a few consumer electronics. And I got some really great feedback. I hadn't yet gotten the idea for a Soul Train lens, or I'd have been digging around for some 70s LPs!

Oehy, this soul thing is a virus that never dies. Together with his mate Thé Funk it's here to stay. 300 lensens wouldn't be enough to describe that hot swingin' feeling. Viualized in Soultrain. Thangs to Youtube it's all coming back, And for me as an European I can feel the fibe of America in those days. Brilliant Lens.

Great lens. Soul train, that really takes me back. The '70s had a lot of great music, but if could only listen to the music from one decade, I'd have to chose the '60s, Motown's golden era. I even did a lens on the Funk Brothers that you might like. :)

Love that name, California_Dreamin! Combine what that conjures up with the sound of the 60s and chillin' in Japan -- You livin' the life! :) I'm glad you came by.

I'd like to give folks a real experience when they come here. Your lens on the Funk Brothers is excellent, and an inspiration for beefing up this one. Keep in touch.
