Donella Meadows - Scientist, Global Citizen and Earth Missionary
Welcome to my page honoring Donella "Dana" Meadows, founder of the Sustainability Institute (now the Donella Meadows Institute) and lead author of the books, 'Limits to Growth' and 'Beyond the Limits'.
With a passion for the earth and an amazing intellect, she became a pioneer in applying systems thinking to critical issues such as poverty, population growth and consumption, and ecological degradation.
Meadows also helped author the State of the Village Report, also called The Miniature Earth Project, where the world was pictured as a village of 1,000 people. See the video below.
Besides being a brilliant scientist, she was also a poetic writer. Read on to learn more about this amazing woman, whose life was cut short by cancer.
What is sustainability?
It is like a three-legged stool.
Environment, economy, and society
all need to be in balance.

“opinionated columnist, perpetual fund-raiser, fanatic gardener, opera-lover, baker, farmer, teacher”
A Beautiful, Poetic Writer
One of Meadows' articles is my favorite of all time. It begins ...
"The earth was formed whole and continuous, without lines." And ends with ...
"Even between you and me, even there, the lines are of our own making."

- Just So Much and No More, by Donella Meadows. We don't get to choose which laws, those of the economy or those of the Earth, will ultimately prevail.
"Your paradigm is so intrinsic
to your mental process that you
are hardly aware of its existence,
until you try to communicate with
someone with a different paradigm."

The Donella Meadows Institute
The Donella Meadows Institute was founded in 1996 to apply systems thinking and organizational learning to economic, environmental and social challenges.
Their mission is to help shift mindsets and restructure systems that are out of step with the realities facing a limited planet. Services include workshops and courses, consulting, and Dana Meadows Fellows. Resources include the complete Donella Meadows archive, papers, columns, games, and models.
