The Doner Kebab is made using slices of marinated meat (lamb, beef or chicken) which is threaded onto a tall vertical skewer and then grilled as it is slowly turned. The cooked meat is cut off the spit into thin slices and then usually served in a pitta bread.

The kebab has steadily grown in popularity since it was introduced to the UK in the 1960's, and today there are over 20,000 kebab shops trading today.

Kebabs have a less than perfect reputation with doubts about quality of meat, food hygeine and nutrition. Generally the kebab bought from a takeaway today is much different to the dish it evolved from, usually containing high levels of fat and salt. The National Association of Kebab Shops is the organisation responsible for improving the image we have of the popular fast food.
