The Journey from Surviving in Poverty to Thriving as an Teacher, Trainer, and Advocate

Donna Beegle grew up in generational poverty. Her parents and their parents lived in poverty. She was homeless for a number of years of her life. When you listen to her tell her story, you will learn how she was mentored out of poverty.

Donna attended a community college and graduated to continue her higher education. She earned a Bachelor's Degree and studied how the poor are portrayed in the media. Then she enrolled in graduate school, earned a Doctorate degree and became a public speaker, author, and advocate.

Her work is devoted to helping those of us who do not live in poverty learn how to become mentors to those of us who do live in poverty. She teaches others about ways to identify the barriers that keep people in poverty and the things we can do to remove those obstacles to change.

As a national consultant and trainer, Donna travels around the country telling her own remarkable story. She uses the lessons from her life as teaching stories for her audience.

Donna also helps communities organize and develop strategies to change the way they treat those who live in poverty. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her family and has traveled as far as Alaska, Michigan, and Washington, D.C. to spread the word about the importance of relationships.

Her work includes helping communities host Opportunity Conferences where she speaks to groups of community volunteers and those seeking opportunities to change their lives. At those meetings people who want to be mentored and those who want to mentor have a chance to imagine the possibilities together.

Through a series of activities, they discuss the opportunities in small groups, exchange contact information, and arrange to begin relationships that help people gain access to what they need, learn how to overcome their fears, and learn the skills they need to find their way out of poverty.

An exciting aspect of Dr. Donna Beegle's work is the way she helps communities help themselves. Watch the videos below to learn more about how communities can organize and support mentoring relationships. There's second video of Donna discussing how the mentoring relationships work and a third showing her make her Call to Action for poverty reduction initiatives.
