Doodling As Art

I think doodling is an art form. Doodling is generally seen as something everyone can do and therefore not really "art". The internet and scrapbooking have caused doodling to come into its own as a legitimate art form.

But what is doodling? How is it different from sketching? I would say that doodling is when you draw without any clear purpose or outcome. Mainly you just let your hand move and follow it's fancy. Or you may try to draw something but you aren't too worried about realism. I would put it under the "expressionism" category of art.

Doodling doesn't have to be done with traditional drawing materials either. You can doodle with paint, fibers, clay - wherever your imagination takes you.

Every work of art begins with the stroke of a pencil-a line, curve, or shape. And the creation of a masterpiece only requires additional inspiration and initiative. In The Art Doodle Book, the beginnings of drawings based on the works of twenty-six of the world's most renowned artists, including Chagall, da Vinci, Degas, Hokusai, Matisse, Rembrandt, and Warhol, serve as starting points for the aspiring artist. Prompted by a boat in a Monet or an eye in a Picasso, doodlers of all ages are encouraged to embellish and create original and exciting masterpieces of their own.

The doodles are accompanied by a finished work by the artist who inspired them, along with a mini-biography detailing the artist's style and their own sources of inspiration. For anyone who ever looked at a work of art and thought they could have done it better, The Art Doodle Book is the perfect gift.

Mike Harmon's Imagination Pictures and Autism

Mike Harmon Imagination Picture All Rights ReservedMike Harmon contacted me via the comments box on this lens. I have reprinted his comment below. It is fascinating what he is doing with doodles to help people with autism. He sent me the sample of his work to post here. What you see is just a small piece of a much larger drawing. I recommend checking out his Colour Buddy website where you can order posters to color in yourself. He also has a gallery of prints at Imagekind which I think are amazing.

"I have been doodling for many years now although for me they come under a different name. Many years ago when I started I realised that by placing one small picture next to another a third picture could be made. After years of hard work and many many hours of trying to get the pictures to 'fit' each other I produced what I called the 'imagination pictures'.

As the creator of these pictures I realised there was more to this idea then I first realised. So I took myself off to the local library and looked into how art can stimulate the mind in different forms. After taking my pictures into the local school and meeting a few children with Autism I realised that I was on the right track. Six months later I produced a board game through Falcon Games called 'Zoom-in'.

I sent one of my pictures to a professor at Cambridge University Autism Research Centre who informed me that this new art form could help in certain levels of Autism. I knew then that I had to produce my own products from this new art form using thousands of small doodles.

If you stand back from the pictures, say 4-6 feet, your own mind/imagination will find your own pictures by grouping many of the pictures together-hence 'the imagination pictures'.

I now produce mind game posters for children and adults which can help with memory, attention, focus, visual perception, problem solving, stress, reaction time, self expression, co-ordination and motor skills. You can see this art in the background of the Doodle Day for Epilepsy Action website. "

Marla Olmstead - Child Doodle Artist

I recently watched a fascinating documentary entitled My Kid Could Paint That which is about Marla Olmstead, a girl born in 2000 who started selling doodle paintings for thousands of dollars when she was three years old. There is controversy as to whether she really paints them all or if her parents, particularly her father, help her. In either case, I feel the art is stunningly vibrant.

The Doodle Art of Sarah Hennessey

Sarah was kind enough to take the time to answer my questions about her creative process.

How long have you been making these doodle drawings? Pretty much since early elementary school. I can remember around 7th or 8th grade, I was big into doodling in notebook margins during class, and I would create intricate abstract swirling patterns on the back of my left hand and even on my shoes and bookbag (using whiteout). In high school, my parents let me paint a big swirl mandala in white on my blue bedroom wall, and I remember feeling so excited about that! So, basically, I've been doodling for the majority of my life!

When did you start drawing? Since very, very young. I loved coloring books early on, and started drawing still-lifes because of my wonderful art teacher in grade school (probably around 4th grade).

What inspired you to make these drawings? My inspiration comes from a couple distinct sources. Paul Klee is my favorite painter of all time, and his early black ink drawings are awesome (also, a tad creepy) and his more graphic paintings also have a big impact on what I do. I also really connect to the mehndi (henna) art tradition and feel particularly drawn to the swirls, symmetry and natural movement in that style. I also tend to gravitate toward weird things, like the entire surrealist movement, and pretty much anything black-and-white. I also recently discovered something called "zentangle" (Zentangle) that is very much in line with what I do!

Is there anything special you do to get ready to draw or do you just do it whenever you feel like it? I just dive in, no special preparations. Sometimes I draw with TV going in the background, other times I just sit at my desk and have music going. I can draw pretty much anywhere.

Do you have any other creative pursuits? I joke among my friends that I have art-ADHD, because I have SO many other pursuits that it's ridiculous. Sewing/quilting is perhaps my second biggest love after drawing, but I also love painting, making jewelry, rehabbing furniture (which I talk about a lot on my blog: Hennessey House ), etc.. I am constantly going through phases, but sewing and refurbishing pieces for my home are staples in my life.
