A Doodlebug Is One Cute Little Critter For Sure!

Serious info and facts about the doodlebug, also called pillbug or roly poly. But wait, there's more...

As English is my second language (I'm German), certain words strike me as especially cute or funny-sounding. "Doodlebug" is one of those words. My wife and I call each other "Doodlebug" or "Doodle", and a few years ago we even created a peanut butter praline candy named "Doodlebug!"

Chef Karen leaves me little love notes with the cutest doodlebug drawings. One day, I had the idea to share this cute little critter with the world, and so I turned it into a graphic design to be placed on various products and offered for sale. Please check it out further below on this page. Have fun, and don't forget the romance!

Doodle facts on Wikipedia

Armadillidiidae is a family of woodlice, a terrestrial crustacean group in the order Isopoda. Unlike members of the family Porcellionidae, members of this family can roll into a ball, giving them their common name of "pill bug," "potato bug", "doodlebug", or the the more recent and increasingly popularized term, "roly-poly," which has been used regionally as early as 1968.

The most well known example is Armadillidium vulgare, the common pill bug. These arthropods commonly feed on decaying vegetation and are found under logs, garbage pails or any other place where moisture can be found. Moisture is essential to pill bugs due to their breathing organs, which are like gills. Pill bugs, although often thriving in damp areas, have often been known to live in dry beds. Read more here

A different doodlebug...

In the United States, doodlebug was the common name for a self-propelled railroad car. Such a coach typically had a gasoline-powered engine which provided electricity to traction motors on the vehicle, which drove the axles.
Doodlebugs sometimes pulled an unpowered trailer car, but were more often used singly.

They were popular with some railroads during the first part of the 20th century to provide passenger and mail service on lightly-used branch lines, obviating the need to operate conventional trains consisting of a locomotive and coaches. Several railroads, mostly small regional and local networks, provided their main passenger services through doodlebugs in a cost cutting effort. Whole story here

Wow! A Nazi doodlebug!

The V-1 was designed by Robert Lussar of the Fieseler company and Fritz Gosslau from the Argus engine works, with a fuselage constructed mainly of welded sheet steel and wings built similarly or of plywood. The simple Pulse jet engine pulsed 50 times per second,[2] and the characteristic buzzing sound gave rise to the colloquial names "buzz bomb" or "doodlebug" (after an Australian insect). Common names

Common names for woodlice vary throughout the English-speaking world. They include: "armadillo bug", "cheeselog", "doodlebug" (also used for the larva of an antlion), "pill bug" (usually applied only to the genus Armadillidium), "roly-poly", "potato bug", "roll up bug", "slater"and "sow bug".

Science...sigh...

Adult Males and Females
On the underside, females have leaf-like growths at base of some legs. These brood pouches hold developing eggs and embryos. The first two appendages on the male abdomen are modified as elongated copulatory organs.

Immatures (different stages)
The immature isopod molts four or five times. They look like adults except for size, proportion, color and sexual development.

Mark Twain & Doodlebug...

...and advice for Windows users

He laid himself down and put his mouth close to this depression and called:
"Doodlebug, doodlebug, tell me what I want to know! Doodlebug, doodlebug, tell me what I want to know!"
The sand began to work, and presently a small black bug appeared for a second and the darted under again in a fright.
"He dasn't tell! So it was a witch that done it. I just knowed it."
