The Doodling Strokie

A doodling strokie is a stroke survivor *bleep* bent on learning to use those hands again in a fun way. To be a "doodling strokie" you just need to grab a pencil and dive in.

Some of you might want to use a pen. Pencils are really painful when you keep stabbing yourself while trying to keep control.

Have fun and happy doodling!

My Heroes!

Now and then, I'll sneak a wikipedia blurb of one of my all time heroes in the tooning industry. This month, it's Ollie Johnston.

Oliver Martin Johnston, Jr. (October 31 1912 - April 14 2008) was an American motion picture animator. He was one of Disney's Nine Old Men, and the last to pass away. He was recognized by The Walt Disney Company with its Disney Legend Award in 1989. His work was recognized with the National Medal of Arts in 2005.

He was an animator at Walt Disney Studios from 1935 to 1978, and became a directing animator beginning with Pinocchio, released in 1940. He contributed to most Disney animated features, including Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Fantasia and Bambi. His last full work for Disney came with The Rescuers, in which he was caricatured as one of the film's characters, the cat Rufus.

Johnston co-authored, with Frank Thomas, the reference book The Illusion of Life, which contained the 12 basic principles of animation. This book helped preserve the knowledge of the techniques that were developed at the studio. The partnership of Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston is fondly presented in the documentary Frank and Ollie, produced by Thomas' son Theodore.

This Week's To Do!

Pick up the video "Frank and Ollie" and see what happened behind the scenes at Disney in the old days!

Let's get drawing!

I love watching the actual artists who draw a particular character show how they do it.

Mark Kistler is my favourite drawing teacher! I watched Mark's "Imagination Station" on PBS and used his books to learn how to draw after my first stroke in '97. It was the best physical therapy you could ask for!

So grab some paper and a pen/pencil, kick back with a video and let the fun begin!

PS: Check out Mark's web site at: Imagination Station

PPS: Video #2 isn't Mark, but it is really cool!

Mini Comic Books!

Make your own fun with mini comic books!

One of the things I've really loved doing with my doodles is making mini comic books! Here's Part 1 of Revenge of the Cat. It's in PDF format so you can download it, print it out and fold it into a comic book. Click on the pic for instant download.

Directions: Fold length-wise. Then fold in half so page 5 is against the cover shot. Next fold page 1 against page 2 and 3 against 4! There you have it! A mini-comic book!
