Where to begin?  Door County is a unique vacation destination of the Midwest.  Often referred to as the "Cape Cod of the Midwest", it is so many things.  It is shopping.  It is sightseeing.  It is boating, sailing, and fishing.  With over 300 miles of shoreline, it is a water lover's paradise.

Door County is the "thumb" on the east side of Wisconsin.  There is something for everyone.  Five state parks and ten lighthouses are located on the peninsula, each offering a different experience.  It has history and drama.  The straits between Door County and Washington Island are known as "Death's Door" because of its treacherous waters.

What I like best about Door County is the feeling of truly being on vacation.  There are no fast food restaurants (once you get north of Sturgeon Bay).  No Wal-Marts.  No Targets.  Everything is local.  I love the wild feeling of the peninsula.  Weather rules here, which is perhaps why parts close down during the winter.  I've been traveling there for over 17 years.  I still find new things every time.

For a unique vacation experience, visit this gem of the Midwest!

A Different Way To Explore Door County--Geocaching!

Geocaching is a high tech search hunt. Armed with a GPS unit or GPS-enabled phone and coordinates to the geocache, the hunt is on to find hidden treasure. How it's hidden and where are limited only by the hider's imagination.

Geocaching has been a favorite activity of ours in Door County, Wisconsin. A few geocaches, accessible only by boat in the summer, make for more fun challenges. Here are a few that we found while visiting:

Chambers Island Geocache

Chambers Island Lighthouse

Horseshoe Hideway

My Inspiration

Door County was partly behind my inspiration to become an artist. There is an absolute treasure trove of material to be sure. The views are incredible on or off the beaten path. In fact, some of THE best views are ones where there aren't any shops or restaurants.

I haven't been one for plein air, but in Door County I found the desire to capture first hand my experiences. Here is one of my favorite views of Fish Creek. The original painting is available.

My Favorite Door County Video

There's something so Door County about this video. I love the music, the water, the scenery. Whenever I need a bit of DC, this is where I go.

i was just there last weekend on a quick trip from Iowa. I love how you can go from a busy cherry "stand" to the beach and have instant peace. Would love to live there. 5*
