Shopping for and decorating a college dorm-start with the list!
The first time I looked at "the list" of what to bring to school, dollar signs flashed in front of my eyes, my palms got sweaty and I may have started to hyperventilate.....OK I may be exaggerating, but not by much!
Seriously, the dorm room shopping lists are long and we do want to make sure that when we pull away from the campus the day we leave them at school, they will go to sleep the first night with the feeling that they have brought a bit of home with them. Get the items on the list, but buy them with your child's personality in mind.
When kids walk into an empty dorm room on the first day, they will see 4 walls and a stripped bed. The lighting is bad, the room might smell and it seems strangely like a hospital. The faster they can make that room their own, the faster they will be on their way to a great school year.
School starts soon. Let's get busy!
STOP!!! I knew that would get your attention!
First things first. Before you do anything else, get a copy of "What to Bring to College" from your child's university. Every college has one. Honest!
OK- We have the list and I have it in front of me - now what?
Start by getting more lists!
Here is a list from www.collegeboard.com for you to print.

Start at home: look to your pantry & storage shelves and save money! Recycle first!
NOW what do we do with all these lists?
Make your personalized list of course!
Now that you have "the list", go through it and check off the items that you may already have in your home.
Computer, printer, blanket, toiletries, etc..
Contrary to popular belief (your child's), it is NOT necessary to buy every item on the list. Once you have a working list it is time to start planning.
If your child will have room mates, it would be a good idea to have them coordinate with them about who brings the coffee maker, the shower curtain and bathmat, the (gasp!) cleaning supplies. There is no need for 2 or more sets of cleaning supplies as we full well know exactly how much those rooms will actually be cleaned!
After you have added, deleted and reduced, print at least 5 copies of this list. Keep one in the car, on in your purse/wallet one in the room where you are storing your purchases, one for packing it all up.
When you have your lists printed and stored, you are ready for the next step.

It is almost move- in day! Get out your "list" one last time!
- If you have an empty room or corner of a room take it over. Take your list and create a packing room.
- Don't wait until the last minute. You can actually start this process as soon as you start buying for your list.
- Take everything out of the packages. Wash sheets and towels, they stink when you take them out of the package!
- Once the bags are unpacked and the list is organized it is time to figure out how to pack it all up.
- With your packing list in hand, organize your purchases by the categories on the list. Check the items off again to make sure you haven't missed anything.
- Use those storage containers. Put cleaning supplies in one, food supplies in another, laundry supplies in another. You get the idea! If you do this NOW you will know if you need anything NOT on the list.
- If you have bought stackable drawers or cubes for under the bed, make sure you have those put together packed as well. When you pack the car you will have cut the clutter!
- When you have run out of storage containers, get out the suitcases and cardboard boxes!
- When you are done, put your feet up and relax!
Next you need to figure out how to get it all in your Mini!!
Once you have shopped your way through the "list", learn how to put it all together!
One Last Thing
Hey Mom and Dad...
... don't forget to add in a few of your own surprises for your student to find when they set up their new home.
They might not tell you so, but I bet that after you pull away from school and they are busy unpacking, a photo album, a stuffed animal, a Starbucks Card ......will remind them you love them and will go a long way to help them get comfortable in their new home!
Good luck! Let me know if there are any tips I might have missed. I would love to add them to the list.
Moving Day
Bring a small tool kit (better yet- create one for your student), some pads to make moving furniture easier, some kind of room freshener, and the knowledge you will still likely be making a trip to Target or WalMart!
If you think you have the perfect, "list" and haven't forgotten anything, you will likely be wrong! I was. By the looks of the check out line at Target, there were a lot of other people that were wrong as well~!
Keep your sense of humor it may be a LONG day!
Once you are finished and ready to say your final good-bye, take a picture of their first space to remind yourself that this in the beginning of a new adventure.
Take it from me, it is a lot easier to say good-bye when you know they have a space that is comfortable and warm.
When you are in the car and driving away, I suggest a tissue or two...just in case you find yourself with tears in your eyes.
Then, congratulate yourself on a job well done!
Take a picture of the finished dorm room

I came to the dorms as a freshman only with a towel. I inherited a knife set and a Chinese bowl somewhere along the way and brought this to my marriage. They mysteriously disappeared a week after getting married.
