An Introduction To Dorset

Dorset is one of England's prettiest and most historic counties and lies in the middle of the South Coast.

It is bordered by Hampshire to the east, Devon to the west, Wiltshire to the northeast and Somerset to the northwest.

Dorset scenery varies considerably form the north to the south.

In the south you have the beautiful beaches that stretch from Christchurch to Bournemouth, Sandbanks and across the Purbeck Hills to Swanage, the Chalk Cliffs of the Jurassic Coast, plus historic towns such as Lyme Regis and Dorchester.

In the northern part of Dorset you have wonderful old towns such as Wimborne, Sherborne and Shaftesbury together with rolling hills and fields full of crops and wildlife.

Dorset has a history that goes back many centuries. The landscape is covered with Iron Age burial mounds and hill forts, the remains of Roman Settlements and roads, and many other features of interest.

Despite all of this, Dorset is relatively little know to most Americans, so hopefully this lens will help to increase the awareness of this wonderful county in England where I was born.

DORSET ON WIKIPEDIA

Dorset () (or archaically, Dorsetshire), is a county in South West England on the English Channel coast. The county town has been Dorchester since at least 1305, situated in the south of the county at . Between its extreme points Dorset measures from east to west and north to south, and has an area of . Dorset borders Devon to the west, Somerset to the north-west, Wiltshire to the north-east, and Hampshire to the east. Around half of Dorset's population lives in the South East Dorset conurbation. The rest of the county is largely rural with a low population density. Dorset's motto is 'Who's Afear'd'.

Dorset is famous for the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, which features landforms such as Lulworth Cove, the Isle of Portland, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door, as well as the holiday resorts of Bournemouth, Poole, Weymouth, Swanage, and Lyme Regis. Dorset is the principal setting of the novels of Thomas Hardy, who was born near Dorchester. The county has a long history of human settlement and some notable archaeology, including the hill forts of Maiden Castle and Hod Hill.

Dorset is truly a beautiful place and I'm lucky enough to live here. I run Dorset Catering company and it's great to see people get married in the lovely surroundings.

I see Corfe Castle is in Dorset, and after researching the history of the castle, I think it would be a great idea to do another "Castles of England" lens. (Thanks for the suggestion, Bamburgh Castle is amazing, so I have to include that one as well.) When I get it up and running, I'll come back and lensroll this one to it.

Well, if the economy ever turns around (meaning my now pitiful stock portfolio) I do hope to make it over to merry old England...I'll be referencing some of your lenses for sure.

I am an English guy who moved to the USA in 1994, spent 12 years in Indiana, then moved to South Florida in 2005. I have a background in computers, have run my own web sites since 1998, and spend more time working than I would like (as do we all)...

I enjoy travel, spent a year in New Zealand, followed by 12 years of travel for work, mostly to Central and South America and the Caribbean. I love meeting people from different backgrounds and cultures and experiencing different ways of life. I have met some wonderful people on my travels, and one of thing I have found is that laughter is one of the best ways to make friends.

I love humour, and have run a jokes mailing list for the last 8 years, helping make thousands of people laugh around the world. A lot of my humour also shows through in my lenses and blogs.
