Dortmund - Between Tradition and Exhuberance
Dortmund began to write its history since 880, under the name of Throtmanni; after 1320 it appeared in the writings of the times as "Dorpmund. In the 2000s it has become one of the "greenest" European cities, with 280 square miles of parks and gardens.
Dortmund's most expanded park, Westfallenpark, invites visitors to walk quietly on its footpaths or to be a part of different cultural events. Integrated in Westfallenpark lies Rosarium, the third largest in the world, which houses over 3,000 species and varieties of roses.
When the discount months approach, Dortmund becomes an important shopping center, receiving visitors from all over Europe. From late January to mid February discounts in the stores may reach even 80 - 90%. The most famous shopping streets are Westenhellweg, Ostenhellweg and Hansastraße. Lately, Bruckstrasse and Leppingstrasse became very popular among locals and tourists.
If you visit Dortmund you should not miss the Zoo that stretches over an area of 28 hectares and shelters over 2,500 animal all across the world.
Dortmund is also remarkable as a sports city, with over 140,000 people enrolled in one of the 600 sports clubs. It is not surprising that more than 38,000 of them are enrolled in a football club. In addition, Borussia Dotmund, the city's symbol team, is the first German club to win a European trophy.
If you want to serve the genuine German cuisine, your first option should definitely be one of the restaurants in Dortmund. Don't forget also to taste the diverse types of beer. Spending a night should not be a problem; one night accommodation in Dortmund starts from 40 euros.
