Dot TV Domains for Media Websites

Ranked #448 in Internet, #23,181 overall

What is a dot TV Domain?

Most internet users are familiar with the .com and .net extensions used in the internet domain names we see in our browser address bars (eg. www.squidoo.com) however there are a growing number of new extensions gaining popularity such as .tv for video sites like hollywood.tv

A Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) extension represents a country such as .us for the USA or .ca for Canada. Other ccTLD's are being adopted for their familiar meanings such as .fm and .tv

Technically the extension .tv represents the island nation of Tuvalu, however it's popular use as an acronym for 'television' has given it life as a popular domain extension for entertainment and broadcast websites featuring rich video content.

TV Trends

While still a newcomer on the block, .tv has seen a steady rise in popularity since it's introduction in 2006.

On December 14, 2006, VeriSign announced an alliance with Demand Media, run by ex-MySpace chairman Richard Rosenblatt to market the .tv Top Level Domain Name (TLD) as the preferred web address for rich media content.

This graphic from Google Trends shows .tv growth to date.

Register a .TV Domain Name

The best keyword TV domains are mostly spoken for and can be found on the aftermarket at sites such as eBay however many good brandable.tv names are still available for fresh registration.

Unlike some country code extensions .TV domains are available for anyone to register. They are slightly more expensive then .com or .net in most cases running about $30 per year.

I recommend GoDaddy as an established trusted registrar.

.tv is Bogus

ratetea says:

I'm not a big fan of TV, and I think the association with TV cheapens the domain name. If you are going to go with a domain other than .com, I think .net, .us, .org, or other more neutral domains are usually a better choice, unless your site is specifically about TV or oriented towards a TV audience.

I've been struggling to start a site that host shows. (Our own native shows) and I've always been for the .TV domain. There's just something classic about it...One thing is that the shows aren't going to be aired on Television, Is it still ok to use a .tv domain?

Yes you could still use a .tv domain, it has no special requirements for how you use it. If your "native shows" are for a specific region you could also use a country code domain like .de .ca .it ect.

I think the .TV domain name makes some sense for sites that are really about television, such as TV networks, or the official sites of various TV shows. But for a general website, I think TV has a cheap connotation. Other extensions, such as .net (connoting the web, or networking), or .us (connoting a US audience) seem more appropriate in these cases. It's all about the connotation you want. TV very strongly evokes the subject of television, so if the site isn't about television, I think it just looks cheap.
