Inspiring Self-Taught Painter of Dots

Sam McMillan, from Winston-Salem, NC, started painting when he was 60 years old. Call his work folk art, outsider art, self-taught art, or vernacular art — I call it inspiring. You have probably heard Thomas Kinkade being referred to as The Painter of Light. Sam McMillan, to me, is The Painter of Love. His artwork evokes memories of innocent childhood and gives me a peaceful, joyful feeling when I view it. This is my homage to Sam, The Dot Man. Enjoy.

Sam, The Dot Man Highlights

Lens highlights

A dear lady I met online printed out this lens and showed it to Sam when she met him at Kentuck in 2008. He signed the printout and signed a postcard artwork he had made -- thanking me for this lens!! Alas, it got lost in the mail. ...But, just knowing he appreciated this page makes me almost as happy as actually having a piece of his artwork signed just for me! Yay! Thank you, Mr. Sam!

Here is a photo of Sam at the 2008 Kentuck Festival!

To Chavon and the rest of Sam's grandchildren: I love your grandpa and do feel lucky that he is near. I hope you get the chance to visit from Hawaii. Love.

Very nice lens, and an interesting man. 5***** Dot painting is very popular in El Salvador as well. I have several paintings from someone who was a well known artist a few years ago. I love them.
