Am I a beautiful Dogue de Bourdeaux? Do I look scary?

Or am I just misunderstood and really a gentle Giant

From the lens Dogue De Bordeaux the French Mastiff.

I must admit for anybody who is asking if a Dogue is the right Dog for them, molly truly is the easiest trained, and friendliest dog I have ever met. But with all dogs, taking on a breed specific does bring a lot of responsibility, so if you are able to provide the care and attention these big dogs require. I hope our story helps people not rush out to buy a Bordeaux because of their breed, but because they want a loving family member of their household. that do take a lot of time, training and attention.

Your dog is SO cute. Your photos were so realistic, it looked like I could reach out and pet him. I saw his soul in his eyes.

Oh my goodness, love, love, love! Poor Molly though! Glad she recovered quickly from surgery!

We have recently adopted a French Mastiff named Rocky and he is the most loveable, sweetest "big guy" I have ever met. He had stage 2 heart worm when we got him and he has since been treated. He was underweight, scared and quite shy when we first got him. His personality is coming out and he has totally taken up residence in our house and hearts. Love him!
  • LisaAuch May 6, 2012 @ 1:38 pm | delete
Awh, i love hearing stories like this, good luck with your boy rocky, and do pop back in to tell us how he is doing!

Our neighbor has a DdB who is getting on in years. When he's had enough of his walk, he just lays down and refuses to go any further. It's hysterical! Loved your lens!!

My best friend has a huge Mastiff. He's still a pup but is already a giant. He's so sweet and has a funny and quirky personality.

I have a Dogue de Bordeaux too - mine is called Daisy whereas my Shih tzu is called Molly! They are the most beautiful dogs but oh my goodness can they pull - I am going to go and find a halti for Daisy today - I ended up flat on my face last night after she pulled me over trying to run! Thanks for this lovely page - its always soo nice to see other dogue de bordeauxs
  • LisaAuch Aug 20, 2011 @ 3:04 pm | delete
The halti works! make sure it is properly fitted, and it is comfortable for your dog, as they have so much excess skin round there!

I think that a lot of Molossers have a bad reputation. I've been fighting stigma with my parents from the time that we decided to get our dog. My parents are convinced that all the Molossers and bully breeds are terrible, aggressive dogs. But we put our foot down, and they are getting used to the fact that there is a Rottweiler in the family and that there will probably be at least one more within the next two years.

It's our responsibility as owners of large, powerful dogs to work on that reputation through training and education.

Molly's story is wonderful! Tidbit is proud to have met her.

What a great dog Molly is, thanks for telling us all about her. It's very sad when people buy dogs as some kind of status symbol with no knowledge of how they need to be looked after, you only have to imagine yourself in the dog's place to know that being cooped up alone in a flat most of the time is not a suitable way to live. I know of someone who has a dog which lives in a 'dog crate' most of the time because his owners work during the day. At weekends they will take themselves off to the beach BUT they leave the dog at home ... unbelievable! I suppose it must be so inconvenient for them to have the dog get wet or dirty. He has to use a litter tray. They need to give the dog to an appreciative doggy home and, if they really want a pet, get a hamster!

The Dogue de Bordeaux also known as the French Mastiff and sometimes known as the Bordeaux Bulldog is in fact a fairly short, stocky mastiff. The coat is short and gentle with loose fitting skin. Coat colours include numerous shades of fawn to mahogany with a darker red or black mask around and under the nose including the lips and eye rims. There are sometimes bright markings about the chest and tips of the toes. The tail is thick at the base tapering to a point. The chest is deep, broad reaching lower compared to elbows. The legs are muscular. The thick skin tone about the neck is loose, forming a noticeable dewlap. The eyes are hazel to dark brown depending about the color of the dog and are set wide apart. The ears are small, hanging down, in proportion to the dog and are darker in color. The nose is large with wide-open nostrils, color depends about the mask of the dog. The teeth fulfill in an underbite. The upper lips hang thickly right down over the lower jaw. The wrinkled head is massive, heavy and broad. Males can have a head circumference of 27-30 inches (68-75cm). The muzzle is somewhat short (1/3 the total length of the head), wide, powerful and thick, with a pronounced stop.
