Down Syndrome - An Introduction

When you hear that your child has down syndrome you probably experience the following emotions: fear, confusion, anger, bewilderment, numbness.
All of them are very real and understandable and this site is specifically set up to help you make sense of what has just happened and to give you hope.

IN VERY BROAD TERMS

the science bit

Down syndrome is a chromosomal abnormality characterized by the presence of an extra copy of genetic material on the 21st chromosome, either in whole (trisomy 21) or part (such as due to translocations). The effects of the extra copy vary greatly among people, depending on the extent of the extra copy, genetic history, and pure chance.

Practically

what does it mean

Down syndrome used to be poorly understood and as little as 50 years ago many children with Down Syndrome were locked away out of sight. It is only in the last 20 years that society has become better educated about Down Syndrome and with education comes understanding.
Years ago many children with Down Syndrome would not have made it to their first birthday due to the very common heart problems they experience. Today, the situation is very much better and most children not only have a good life they make a valued contribution to society.
This site does not seek to give answers to any problems but seeks to continue the educational process started many years ago.
Rather than load up the site with loads of information we have provided subsidiary pages where more specific information can be found. These multiple sites are listed below with a brief overview of each area.

BIBIC - British Institute for Brain Injured Children
Whatever the cause of a child's learning difficulties the effects are still profound. Working with parents and carers, bibic offers a valuable support system which offers time to talk, expert advice and practical help.

Following an inter-disciplinary assessment, we produce tailored programmes to improve the quality of life for the child and family. Parents are then taught how to take an active role in their child's development by implementing these programmes at home.

Progress is carefully monitored and programmes are adjusted as and when necessary.

For further details please fill in the enquiry form and we will send you full details of our services.

Great lens with lots of great resources. I'd like to recommend one more:
Teaching Children with Down Syndrome about their Bodies, Boundaries and Sexuality by Terri Couwenhoven. I have heard the author speak and my daughter and I participated in one of her puberty workshops as well. This is a difficult topic that is often overlooked. But it is important for all children and teens to learn about their bodies.
