Down Comforters

Down are the very fine feathers that fluff up to trap air and protect the birds from cold. These fine feathers are clumped up into down clusters, fine 'balls' of feathers that are fluffy and soft. That's how a goose down comforter gets his great feel and provides the cosy warmth we so love.

Goose down and duck down are basically very similar. However, because geese are larger than ducks, the goose down clusters are larger than duck down, resulting in better insulation for down comforters and fluffier filling for down pillows. As a rule of thumb you can use this formula: Larger waterfowl = larger down clusters.

Ounce for ounce, goose down is the finest lightweight insulating material known today, natural or synthetic. Goose down's unique three dimensional structure creates thousands of tiny air pockets. These air pockets, trapped by the down fibers, provide the superior insulating ability that goose down is known for. But that is by far not the only great quality down has:

High quality goose down is also extremely resilient - that describes the ability of goose down to be compressed then immediately spring back to it's original form and shape with all of those wonderfully warm air pockets. No other material is as resilient as a high quality large cluster down.
