Is my CPU 32 bit or 64 bit? CPU Check for Windows users

Windows 32 or 64 bit

To run a 64-bit version of Windows or Ubuntu, your computer must have a 64-bit-capable processor.

To find out if your processor is 64-bit-capable, do the following:

Open Performance Information and Tools by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Security, and then clicking System, then clicking Windows Experience Index, and then clicking View and Print Detailled performance and system information

Click View and print details.

In the System section, you can see what type of operating system you're currently running under System type. Under 64-bit capable, you can see whether you can run a 64-bit version of Windows. (If your computer is already running a 64-bit version of Windows, you won't see the 64-bit capable listing.)

Yes I prefer Ubuntu because ...

I prefer Kubuntu

Gary Maxie says:

Ubuntu is Computer Freedom at its best. I have been using Ubuntu over 3 years now and it just gets better and better. If you ever use it and learn what it can do you will find out that windows is a pain you can do without!

Sameer says:

I have been using ubuntu since last one year despite not being ageek & so far i have not faced any problems.

& i dont c me using windows now as its fast secure & above all free:)

jojo says:

I also am a relatively new Ubuntu user x1.5 years now and am super turned on to it. This is a whole new dimension to me.

thatgrrl says:

I've been using Ubuntu for over a year. I had only used Windows before. I'm not finding it much different from Windows. I miss playing my Windows games but... I'm a lot more productive now that I'm not playing them. I like not having to really worry about viruses and malware. I still do a clean sweep and I back up regularly. But, I have not had any compuer problems since the change. I may install Windows on the side later on, but I'm going to stick with Ubuntu as my main OS.

No I keep using Windows because ...

wolvyz says:

Ubuntu is like my secondary operating system. I still find Windows easier to use because I've been on windows since the beginning.

Dave says:

I prefer Windows. I'm trying Ubuntu, but...
-I find Unity awful. Ugly, counterintuitive and confusing.
-I find things very hard to find. Where is a quick way to get a shell prompt.
-hardware support is still sketchy.
-major bugs exist that are, IMO, beta level (such as I can't bring some background windows to the foreground at times.)

Bluetooth on ubuntu 11.10 (Bluetooth works instantly with Ubuntu 12.04)

Tips ubuntu 11.10

Bluetooth on Ubuntu 11.10

Bluetooth is something that's supposed to be work out of the box but frequently is not working at all.

That's why every time I install a new Ubuntu version I test if bluetooth is working.

So, fresh ubuntu 11.10, client is LG 350 phone.
Receiving files works fine.
Pairing initiated from the computer works fine.
Sending files - failed with the a 'permission denied error'. After searching/asking I've come across a bug report.
Since I still need to send files I have to mount my phone with obexfs. In short:

Now make sure your computer can scan your cellphone:
Turn your cell phone on.
Select settings on your cell phone

select connections
select buetooth
select bluetooth settings
select visible Done, now your computer is able to scan your cell phone.

Now install obexfs on your computer
install obexfs (the easiest way is via Ubuntu Software Center or Synaptic) or via terminal and run this command
sudo apt-get install obexfs

pair the phone with the PC (works from the gui)
Get the device MAC and mount it with obexfs:

  • $ sudo apt-get install obexfs
  • $ hcitool scan
    Scanning ...
Mac address : A1:91:2C:B3:83:C5 LG-P350 (Please replace Mac Address with your results)

Create a folder e.g. cellphone Click the right mouse button and create folder on your desktop

  • $ obexfs -b A8:92:2C:B3:83:C5 /home/ Your Username/desktop /cellphone (Please replace Mac Address with your results)

    To unmount the device:
    $ fusermount -u /mountpoint

    Source: great wiki.

Pairing from the phone: failed with timeout. The phone asks to confirm the pin but after that it times out.

Ubuntu was a fun operating system for me since I found about it. I also like Linux Mint.
    • PCInkcouk May 17, 2012 @ 8:53 am | delete
Linux is not immune to viruses, it simply does not get attacked much due to its low number of users in comparison to other operating systems. There are probably more loopholes in Linux than Windows but very few virus writers will target Linux because of the relatively low user count.

So security isn't necessarily due to good programming but by avoiding being a target.

I been using Ubuntu Linux as my main operating system for over a year now, and it works great. I like that it is free, and does not use up all my free RAM like Windows.

I never had trouble installing Ubuntu until this new version, 12.04. It's like something is missing from the install CD - except that it worked just great when I installed it on the other computer yesterday. Today on the new computer it can't find a root file, won't even offer me the chance to partition. I'm only keeping Windows so I can play my PC games. I prefer Ubuntu to Windows at this point. But, I've missed all my city building games.

Unity is ruining the whole thing. I have it on one of my machines and I am not quite happy with it. I prefer gnome stability to any advantage unity might have and I don't know about it.
