The center of the universe for most lead playing is centered around learning scales. A scale is just a group of individual notes that are strung together in a pattern. I hate to harp on scales because to many people put too much emphasis on them, this was especially true when I was younger.

That is why I really like the Guitar Scale Mastery system by Craig Bassett. Craig is a master teacher that realizes the value of scales but he also realizes that there is much more to them than knowing the progressions and playing them fast. He teaches you how to visualize and mix in arpeggios and the importance of ear training and improvisation.
