Is Recession the Time for a Home-Based Business? Some Things to Think About.
Ranked #37,166 in Business, #374,997 overall
Now That You've Been Downsized Consider Your Options -- But Be Informed
If you know anyone who is working a home-based business, you have more than likely been pitched the juice or offered a "life-changing" opportunity if you will just give your friend a half hour or more of your time. Then, you get to watch them get excited and try to sign you up after you've talked to someone in their upline about what a great thing this home-based business is.
Or maybe, you are already aware of the multi-level model of marketing and think it would be a brilliant idea if it worked.
Let me give you a few things to think about while you consider your options.
What Multi-Level Marketing is and What it isn't:
Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki wrote a book called Why We Want You to Be Rich. The premise of the book is that financial education is not an integral part of traditional education and, as a result, the middle class is shrinking and those of us who were taught to "save for rainy days" are discovering that our savings are no longer the insurance policy we were taught they would be. Simply stated, Donald and Robert want us to be rich so that we can contribute
to the solution rather than being part of the problem of America's threatened stability.
In Chapter 27 of their book, they actually recommend Network Marketing because it provides several things:
1. Leverage where you can train other people to work for you.
2. Control in a protected system that belongs to you.
3. Creativity in developing your own personal style and talents as you grow your business.
4. Expandability because your business can grow indefinitely.
5. Predictability because your income is predictable when you do what is expected and your income will increase with your success and hard work.
They also address the common conception that Network Marketing is a pyramid scheme. The Robert's response is that corporations are pyramid schemes because only the person at the top, generally the CEO, gets the biggest piece of the income pie. Everyone else gets incrementally less, depending on how close to the base of the pyramid they are. In contrast, a "true" networking marketing business is designed to pull you up to the top rather than keeping you down at the bottom. A network marketing business cannot succeed unless it brings people to the top.
With that said, you should know that many people do not succeed in network marketing. It may be that you have leadership, communication, listening, sales skills and confidence and still be unable to bring a single recruit into your networking marketing business. The reason for this is because in order to succeed in network marketing in today's world, you must have a set of concrete skills that catapult you to the top of the heap of network marketers pitching their business plan. And you must develop a strategy for drawing people to you who are looking for what you have to offer. The traditional model of telling your friends and family about your home-based network marketing business is ineffective because most of them either don't want what you have to offer, it isn't the right time for them or they think you are doing that pyramid thing!
On the other hand, develop some new skills and your success won't rely on the opinions or circumstances of your friends or family. Think of this . . . . you introduce your opportunity to someone you meet by chance in the grocery store. They are excited and you are hopeful. They go home and look up your opportunity on the internet before they ever call you back. If they call you back. On the internet, they discover an article that tells them how they will succeed in their business using online tools. They join that person who gives them value up-front without asking for their phone number. The person online wins. You lose.
That's why the traditional "old school" way of building a network marketing business doesn't work. Predictions are that the network marketing industry is going to grow faster in this economy than during any other time. The other
growing trend is that more and more people are relying on the internet to help them make life-decisions. If you take advantage of these two trends, you will win. People are hungry. But are you ready to do what is needed to teach people how to succeed? Are you ready to learn new skills?
In this economy, the winner will be the person who jumps to the front of the class by developing the online marketing skills that attract people to them and their business. No lottery. No getting rich quick. Just old-fashioned hard work using the tools of the New World. The best tools and system of education about doing just that is at Renegade Professional for Network Marketers.
Are you up to the challenge of learning how to use technology to increase your bottom line? Are you a motivated self starter? Do you like people and helping them grow? Then a home-based network marketing business may just be for you.
How to Adjust Your Marketing Message To WIN During The Recession
Understand the Shift in What Your Target Market Wants
Once you have decided that a home-based network marketing business is the way you want to go in providing for yourself and your family, it is important to understand the shift that the recession has caused in the thinking of your target market.Who is your Target Market?
You may be surprised to find out that the answer to that question doesn't have anything to do with who you think will want what your company sells. Nothing whatsoever! No! Your target market is one of three groups of people: 1) People who have purchased a network marketing opportunity before - because you don't have to sell them on the value of network marketing, 2) Prospects who are already researching your specific company - they are looking for a leader and that person could be YOU and 3) Business Opportunity Seekers - perhaps those who have been downsized from their corporate jobs and find that the market is saturated enough that they cannot find new employment in their previous career field.
How has the recession changed what they are looking for?
That's simple. Where they were looking for status, prestige and those intangibles that would boost their self-esteem before, the focus has now shifted. Before, when daily food, shelter and other basic necessities could be taken for granted, people were free to think about increasing personal enjoyment, growing their sense of accomplishment and developing personal interests.
Now that food and shelter have become more dominant in our minds, the focus has shifted.
People want a sense of security. Many of us may have believed that a sense of security comes from having a corporate job -- that's been a long-held belief along with the belief that education and hard work are enough to secure a financial future. That belief has been shattered and people are searching for security. You can give it to them if you position yourself correctly.
They want to know that they are safe. They want to know that whomever they join in a business opportunity is going to look out for their best interests. They want to know that they are connected with a team of leaders who can actually help them become more financially secure -- they want to re-establish basic safety issues.
They want to be sure that they can stay connected with their loved ones. They are going to be less likely to be willing to spend hours away from home prospecting to their warm market. Friendships and family members are moving up in their priority. Everyone is looking out for the safety of those they love. If they think your opportunity might put a family member at risk -- even if it is just by virtue of that family member being out a few hundred dollars because they don't "work your system" people are going to hesitate to introduce what you are asking them to introduce. Everyone is so much more protective of home and family right now.
They are going to be more concerned about their health and the health of their family members. They want to control whatever aspects of their health and well-being that they can. When the world around them feels like it is spinning out of control, the natural tendency is to want to take control of something. Help them see that they can control their health, their income, their connections and you will have happier, more loyal fans who trust you and return to you over and over again.
Now would be the time to promote the benefits of spending a little more on nutritional products because they are safer than the cheap brands that can be obtained at the corner drug store.
This would be the time to demonstrate how your network marketing opportunity (combined with your teachings on how to use Web 2.0 and the internet to build their team) saves money and time while offering the security of residual income.
Think of this. Right now, nobody is going to purchase a car because it's sexy. No, instead the focus is going to be on safety and reliability. Pay attention to the car commercials and you will see what I mean.
You have to show how safe and reliable your network marketing opportunity is. It's your job as a leader to do that. It's your job as a leader to teach your team how to attract their target market so everyone wins.
With your focus on building your team leadership, it is imperative that you show your team to understand the psychology of the times. To win with your target market, you must know what they are thinking about and what they need. Then, you must fill that need for them in a way that helps them feel safe and secure.
Do this and your business will provide you with safety and security, no matter which way the economic winds blow.
What Kind of Leader Are YOU?
Now That You've Identified Your Target Market, Give Them What They Are Looking For
In the previous article, I explained that your target market is looking for security. But your target market is looking for much more than an understanding of the shift in their mindset in the current economy. To be a leader that draws network marketers to your team, you must understand the qualities of leadership and position yourself so that you can be recognized as the leader your team can rely on through thick and thin. Remember what I said in the last article about their needing security?
What kind of security would you give them if you were able to generate enough leads to relieve your team of the pressure of going to friends and family and try to overcome objections about the pyramid scheme? That's the kind of leader they are looking for! To learn the technical skills required for this kind of leadership, I recommend Renegade Professional. (Actually, you can use what you learn there to market any product or business. I recommend it highly.)
So the real question about what your target market is looking for isn't psychology. Your target market is looking for YOU! You might understand a psychology piece to help them with marketing, but that is just a small part of the total picture that marketers are looking for in leadership. You must position yourself with the leadership qualities and concrete skills that instill confidence in them to the degree that they want to join you.
How do you know if you possess or can develop those leadership skills? Use these questions to evaluate where you are today and where you need to grow to become the leader that others will want to follow.
-Have you served in leadership capacities in the past?
-Can you create a vision and inspire others to see it, too?
-Do you have the ability to create "something" from "nothing"?
-Does a challenge excite you or scare you?
-Are you always looking for a better way to do something that isn't working?
-Can you identify a practical idea from a bad idea?
-Are you willing to take responsibility for both successes and failures?
-Do you finish things you start?
-Are you mentally tough? Can you take disappointment and discouragement in stride?
-Do your friends and family respect you?
-Do people listen to what you have to say?
As you can see, if you are able to answer many of these questions in the direction of having positive leadership qualities, you probably have had some experiences that have challenged you in your life. People are hungry for and clamor toward people who have the wisdom of experience and the ability to share that experience for the benefit of others. It takes a lot to be a leader. It's your job as a leader to take your team under your wing and teach them to lead. If personal growth has always been your priority, you will probably be the kind of leader people will want to follow.
Your team wants to know that you understand them. They want to know that you understand current and future economic trends. They want to know that you are prepared to lead them no matter what comes along so they can succeed in their business.
Most of all, they want a relationship with you that will help them get what they want. That's leadership.
