Parents Blogging About Down's Syndrome

For parents of children with Down's Syndrome (also known as Downs Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Trisomy 21, DS, and T21), the world can sometimes seem like a hostile and unsympathetic place.

We are cast alternately as demons, for allowing perceived genetically abnormal people to survive, or as saints doing charitable work.

We are neither.

We are parents.

We do the best for our children whatever their strengths, weaknesses, talents or disabilities, as any parent does. Having a child with Down's Syndrome is no different, other than there are some in the world who would make it more difficult for our children to grow up and lead full and productive lives.

This Lens has been created to give a list of blog sites by parents of children with Down's Syndrome where you will find, for the most part, they are much like any other parenting blogs.

(Entries on my own blog about Down's Syndrome can be found here)

If you would like me to add any others, or any of the links are no longer active, then please leave a comment in the guest book below.

Help!!!!! My son with Down syndrome is 6. I can't seem to get him fully potty trained. He has the idea and will sometimes pee in the toilet but has never gone poo poo in the toilet. Sometimes he will go poo in the bathtub. Sometimes when he pees, he will only pee a little bit. Then I tell him to finish in the hope that he will. He would be so much easier to care for if only he were potty trained. I give him a lot of praise when he does go. He likes to flush the toilet. He tries to sit on the toilet so he can watch himselff go pee but then he puts his butt in the bowl. I'm going to try and take him every half hour during summer vacation. I love the little guy but I really want him to be potty trained. He is extremely active so he has to be watched every minute. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

A consistent schedule is key! Here's something we do that really helps. Whole my son is sitting on the toilet, we fill a large cup with warm water. While a small stream of water runs in the sink (the noise helps sometimes) we slowly pour the warm water over his penis. Sounds strange but it works every time!! If he has to go, he goes!! Then we praise and reinforce his success. He is staying dry so much more now. BTW, I've heard if a child has low tone (our son is extremely low tone) they don't always feel the sensation to go! Good luck!!

UCLA Extension's Pathway program is hosting a FREE informational live video chat on Nov. 16th at 2 p.m. for young adults 18-25 with down syndrome, autism, and aspergers. We will discuss what's next after high school, independent living, meaningful employment, and much more.

We would love for you to join us. For more information, please go to our event page: http://uclaexlivechat.eventbrite.com/.

To submit questions in advance, email livechat@uclaextension.edu.

We'd appreciate any help in spreading the word. We want to hear from mothers, teachers, and advocates who want more insight on how to better the lives of their loved ones.
