- Help!!!!! My son with Down syndrome is 6. I can't seem to get him fully potty trained. He has the idea and will sometimes pee in the toilet but has never gone poo poo in the toilet. Sometimes he will go poo in the bathtub. Sometimes when he pees, he will only pee a little bit. Then I tell him to finish in the hope that he will. He would be so much easier to care for if only he were potty trained. I give him a lot of praise when he does go. He likes to flush the toilet. He tries to sit on the toilet so he can watch himselff go pee but then he puts his butt in the bowl. I'm going to try and take him every half hour during summer vacation. I love the little guy but I really want him to be potty trained. He is extremely active so he has to be watched every minute. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

- A consistent schedule is key! Here's something we do that really helps. Whole my son is sitting on the toilet, we fill a large cup with warm water. While a small stream of water runs in the sink (the noise helps sometimes) we slowly pour the warm water over his penis. Sounds strange but it works every time!! If he has to go, he goes!! Then we praise and reinforce his success. He is staying dry so much more now. BTW, I've heard if a child has low tone (our son is extremely low tone) they don't always feel the sensation to go! Good luck!!

- There's no right or wrong way to blog - you just do it. Some people blog about their day-to-day activities, others about their work, or their hobbies, or their passions. Some write reviews, some post videos, some track events. Some people post every day, others once a week.
Most blogs change over time - they start with one idea in mind and then evolve. Really it just comes down to making a start and doing it. Fairly soon you will find what's working and what isn't.
All I can really advise is to just go for it :)

- Just browsing here. On 25 October 1989 I had my second child Sam who has Down's. I remember everyone feeling sorry for me and my husband that we hadn't got a normal child. Maybe we should try for another child and maybe we would have a son. He's 21 now. Works and goes to college. Raises money for charities (not learning disability). He has a vast and varied social life. He's well travelled all over the world and has represented his school in South African townships forging links with schools there. Plays sport, loves singing, dancing and acting. He can talk at length on a variety of subjects including current affairs and the state of the world. He is compassionate, kind and the funniest person I have ever met. Having watched the riots across my country (England) over the last few days I was just having a thought. Was it me that had the abnormal chlld on that October day in 1989? Mmmmmm...........

- Anyone who has a child with Down syndrome knows that there are many ups and downs - hopefully more ups! Our daughter with Down has enriched our lives in ways we probably don't even recognize yet. She is 38 and very capable and independent. We are so proud of her, and we love her so much. We know that everyone who meets her receives a gift! Thank you for your blog, for listing the other DS blogs, and for being a frank and honest man.

- I have a 13-year-old son with DS. I've started a blog about the teen years and transitions. It is a little different from most DS blogs though, because, rather than a diary format, it is set up as a source of information on different topics. I hope readers will add to it through the comments section. You'll find it at thirteenandcounting.org
Thanks!

- Any parents & siblings out there willing to share life experience w/a child/teen/adult w/down syndrome please help! I'm researching down syndrome and have found lots on health challenges, but I want to know how daily living is different/more challenging w/a family member w/DS. Is is mainly the stigma that society places on you that is hardest or is it dealing with health or behavior challenges? I want to understand if so many women are tx just because they want a "perfect" child and are afraid of the unknown, or if there are other huge issues that cause people to choose tx. Any info positive or negative stories/info would be helpful. I'd like to know/understand as much as possible before becoming pregnant since I am older and know I couldn't tx if my baby had DS. I'd like to know if I could be a good parent to a child w/this condition since it's likely my child could have DS. I know these kids & babies are adorable, but want to know what the future holds. Is it bright for every person w/DS or just some? Thank you so much for the into/help!

- Children with DS are as individual as children without. Personally, I would recommend you get pregnant if you wish to, and enjoy and love the child you have regardless of whether they have DS or not. For my experiences with my daughter having DS, please click on the link about entries on my own blog, in my intro to this lens. From them you will find other links too. What I would say is, it's not half as scary as you fear it will be :)

- I am the mother of four children, one of whom has Downs syndrome. All of my children have been precious gifts. My family has been fortunate in that we have had mostly positive reactions to our "special needs" child. Earlier this year, the daughter of an acquaintance gave birth to a beautiful little girl who has Down syndrome. My acquaintance said her daughter's friends openly told her she should have had an abortion. I was shocked to hear that kind of reaction in this day and age. Thank you for this lens and the contacts listed here. I will pass them along.
