Nutrition and Down Syndrome

WHY SHOULD MY CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME NEED TO HAVE A BETTER DIET?

A child with down syndrome is less able to defend itself against free racial dammage. This leads to degeneration of every tissue in the body, in particular to the brain and nervous system. This is what causes, for delayed development and impaired functions and oxidation.
The body is producing free racials as a result of just living. Due to the extra chromosome, chrildren with down syndrome, appear to produce more free racials through the progress of metabolism.
What we need is to support the childs natual defence system with high qualities of nutrients rich, whole foods containing high levels of plant antixodents is probably the most important thing, you as a parent can do for your child.

NUTRIENT DENSE FOOD

rich in anxidodants

In this list are just some of the foods that can benefit your child greatly. We should be eating five to six portions of fruit and vegetables daily, and that can be very difficult for a child with Down Syndrome.

Raw vegetables are better for you than cooked ones. I would mention that the best is organic or home-grown. Fruit and vegetables brought at a supermarket have often been in cold store, losing their nutrient values.
  • Carrots excellent to put in a child's lunch box
  • Greens (some green vegetables like broccoli can be eaten raw)
  • celery again goes well in either a salad or lunch box
  • Mushrooms cut up fine in a salad
  • strawberries lovely in a lunch box
  • banana, apple, pears, oranges, pineapples and grapes go well in a smoothie.

ANTI-OXIDANT SUPPLEMENTS AND FOODS

check out what you are buying

I would urge you to be careful about what you buy based upon companies marketing material. Antioxidants are big earners for companies today and there is a lot of deceptive marketing material around today. Become an educated consumer and make sure you compare like with like - or you'll make an expensive mistake.
  1. make sure you are buying a product that is derived from plants - chemical/synthetics are useless
  2. get testimonials from other users
  3. ensure that the products are made to 'Good Manufacturing Practices' GMP and with proven quality control

What Happens When I Cook Food

where do the antioxidants go?

Food when cooked can lose a lot of it nutrients, that's why I mentioned earlier about eating as much raw vegetables as possible. when we cook our veg we lose a lot of nutrients especially if we don't steam them. We don't need to spend a lot of money on an expensive steamer, one that goes on the cooker does very well, I would say better than the electric ones from my experience.
Cooking at low heat rather than cooking fast helps to keep in the nutrients, so if you are using a saucepan on the cooker remember to keep the heat low. Boiling is destructive cooking method, a study showed Cruciferous (part of the Brassicaceae family) vegetables (a group that include broccoli, brussel sprouts and cabbage)had almost 90 percent of their cancer fighting antioxidants removed after boiling, but not much loss after steaming or stir frying. The same effect was observed with flavenoids (phytonutrients) that prevent cancer and heart disease and glucosinolates (plant compound)that helps to prevent cancer.
Zucchini, beans and carrots retain much higher amounts when cooked in a little water, versus being cooked in large amounts of water.
Microwaving is not a good way to cook vegetables it has found that microwaving loses most valuable nutrients.
Steam and stir fry are the best way by far to cook your vegetables. Also when cooking vegetables cook them whole and unpeeled whenever possible

If You Have To Cook - Steam Vegetables

it needn't take time

Steaming vegetables is not only quicker (and therefore cheaper) it is also better for the food. Less cooking time means more nutrients for your child.

ASPARATANE

WHY SHOULD YOU BE CONCERN ABOUT USING ASPARATANE

Asparatane and the bad news
Asparatane is not recommended to anyone, as the side effects can be very harmful.
People taking a lot of food and drinks that have asparatane added can expect to suffer some of the symptoms that can occur when taking asparatane.
I have listed a few of the common ones here: Asthmatic reactions, bloating (fluid retention) Blood sugar control problems, Chest Pains, Breathing difficulties, Dizziness, diarrhea, headaches/migraines, hair loss, hearing loss and the list just goes on. I always make sure, when purchasing food and drinks, that asparatane does not appear in the ingredience. Products that obtain asparatane, often provide little or no nutrients which may protect against chronic methanol poisoning and are often consumed in between meals. Persons who ingest aspartame-containing products are often dieting and more likely to have nutritional deficiencies than persons who take the time to make fresh juices.

HOW I CAN EAT HEALTHY AND SAVE MONEY

BEAT THE CREDIT CRUNCH BUT STILL CONTINUE TO EAT A HEALTHY DIET

We all want to stay healthy especially this cold weather, and we all know the cost of food is going up. By spending more time in your kitchen you can do both. Homemade soups are a great way to feed the family and have a lot of nutrition with them. They are cheap to make and they are so much nicer than buying them from the shops.I going to start this text with one of my favorite soup receipes:

Potatoe and Leeks soup

You will need 2 medium leeks cleaned (organic if possible)
1 small onion skinned and finely chopped
2 medium leeks
25g english butter
350g potatoes peeled and finely chopped (orgainic if possible)
600ml chicken stock
5ml rock salt
1 blade mace
10fl oz elmela double cream
30ml snipped fresh chives or finely chopped watercress to garnish

Finely chop the white part of the leeks, melt the butter in a saucespan add the leeks and onion and fry without browning for 7-10 minutes.Add the potatoes to the pan with the stock, salt and pepper and mace.
Bring to the boil on a low heat, and cover the pan. Simmer gently for 20-30 minutes or until the vegatables are tender. Put into a food processor or rub through a fine sieve. Heat on stove but do not boil, sieve with elmela double cream and chives or watercress.
Serves 4-6 ( This makes a good lunch served with homemade rolls or garlic bread, great to give the children for a snack in the holidays, and a healthy one at that.)

Garlic Bread

If you want to save some money, and have cloves of garlic in the house it is very easy to run up some garlic butter to spread on bread. If you have a bread making you can make a lovely healthy loaf and serve it with garlic butter,
All you need is this
Butter or spread of your choice, mix with 2 cloves of garlic and spread on to the bread. Put in the oven medium heat for 3-5 minutes and serve with the soup

If you really wanted to save money with your vegatables and fruit, why not trying growing your own. Time and effort needs to go into it but it can be very rewarding.

GARLIC

WHY SHOULD I TAKE GARLIC

We can all benefit by taking garlic wether it be a supplement or wether we add it to our food. I use garlic a lot in food, make my own garlic bread add it to different receipes. If you are unwell, it good to up your intake of garlic, because this helps your immume system. Garlic help to keep your body healthy, it good for people suffering from high blood pressure, high cholesterol poor circulation, and heart conditions.
It has also been said that eating garlic, reduces the risk of stomach and colon cancer. It inhibit the growth of different types of cancer especially breast and skin tumors. It also help greatly with colds and chest infections. I recently gave my daughter garlic tablets after a heavy chesty cold, not only did I find it cleared it up,but as she also has a heart condition, I found it helped her circulation making her more active and lively.
