T-Rex Cafe At Downtown Disney

The most recent addition to Downtown Disney is the T-Rex Cafe. It is owned and operated by Landry's, the same restaurant company that boasts both Rainforest Cafe and the Yak & Yeti in its list of highly popular and well themed restaurants.

But the T-Rex Cafe in Orlando, FL (technically, in Lake Buena Vista) actually beats its other popular restaurants in both theming and food. If you've found Rainforest Cafe to be only mediocre, check out the T-Rex Cafe's menu. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

On our Walt Disney World vacation of January '09, we were able to eat at T-Rex Cafe once, and would have done more if it weren't so popular that the wait times are ridiculous. Reservations are a gooood thing. See below for all the info I can muster up on the Downtown Disney T-Rex Cafe.

Videos and Review Below

We came back from our Walt Disney World vacation in February 2009 and had a blast at T-Rex. Scroll down for my video of T-Rex Cafe and a link to my full review with pictures.

T-Rex Cafe Coupons and Discounts

They may be hard to find, but T-Rex Cafe coupons and discounts do exist. Or, at least the discounts do.

The first place that I've found, though, that will give you a discount is through the Rainforest Cafe's Safari Club. I have no idea why this offer isn't shown on T-Rex Cafe's website or the other Landry's owned restaurants, but the Safari Club offers 10% off entrees for up to 4 entrees on every visit, 10% off of merchandise, and priority seating. In addition, they're running a special right now for an additional $10 new member award. This seems to apply to all Landry's restaurants such as T-Rex Cafe and the Yak & Yeti, all of which are on Disney property (one Rainforest Cafe and a Yak & Yeti are in Animal Kingdom, a second Rainforest Cafe and a T-Rex Cafe are at Downtown Disney). For more information, visit RainforestCafe.com and select Ozzie (he's the monkey in the middle...). This applies to all locations as far as I'm aware, not just those on Disney property, but you may want to call them ahead to verify before signing up for membership.

Commenter aprillford left this hot tip: "Hey- Just found some coupons at rainforest.com. They are for $10 off food and bev of $25 or more!! I called T-Rex at DT Disney to see if they honered them and they said "yes" and they can be used in conjunction with the Safari Club discounts!!!"

Please let me know if you find any other T-Rex cafe coupons, or Walt Disney World coupons. Thanks!

T-Rex Cafe Reviews

I had a chance to eat at Downtown Disney's T-Rex Cafe on January 23, 2009. It rocks! Even though the noise level is every bit as loud in real life as it seems to be on the videos, there is no beating the atmosphere or the food. Check out my full review of Downtown Disney's T-Rex Cafe by following the link. And while you're there, take a look around for more Walt Disney World travel tips.

What Does The Downtown Disney T-Rex Cafe Look Like?

MouseSteps has some great photos of the outside of T-Rex Cafe. AllEars.Net has some great shots of the dinosaurs (note that there's a second page of photos on that site), and although Watch Me Eat's pictures aren't as clear as AllEar's, there are some interesting shots that I've not seen elsewhere, plus a video and a meal report.

The inside is designed to look like the Jurassic period, with rooms themed to look like the Ice Age, a Fern Forest, a Shark Room, Geo-Tech Room, Aqua Room, and a Shark Bar with a giant octopus over it. There are also rumors of a geo thermal room with hot "lava" oozing over the walls with a waterfall to create steam.

While I have been in the T-Rex Cafe, it was extremely crowded and I was unable to explore. There was a giant, moving octopus over the shark bar, and the carpet really looks like you're walking through water- it's a little disorienting. There was certainly an ice room (it's also a little disorienting to walk through, and isn't the most appetizing to eat in, but it's very cool from the outside), and definitely the Fern Forest. The Geo-Tech room seems to be a little booth area rather than a full room, and, sadly, I saw no sign of a geo thermal room. however, the kitchen area had nice big flames coming out of it, and so it's possible that such a thing exists in an area that I was unable to view.

There also seemed to be one or two booths in each themed room that were almost completely secluded. They had their own theming, but the high walls I would think block much of the coolness factor of the rest of the restaurant. The booth areas are huge, and so I suspect that they're reserved for large parties.

Unfortunately, because of the crowd, we couldn't even reach the T-Rex Cafe store. I saw some t-shirts and dinosaur toys through the sea of people, but we didn't even reach the entrance of the shop. If anyone can tell us more about the shopping at T-Rex Cafe, please do!

How Do I Get A Reservation at T-Rex Cafe in Downtown Disney?

T-Rex Cafe in Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World opened October 14. Disney Dining does not handle reservations for T-Rex Cafe. They can patch you through, but it's much easier to simply dial T-Rex directly at (407)828-8739.

Please note that reservations can be made as far as 6 months in advance, but not same day. Unfortunately, if you decide you want to eat there and haven't made reservations, you'll be stuck waiting in line. With how popular this restaurant is, it could be an hour wait or longer!

The T-Rex Cafe Menu

Even though I'm not so devoted to everyone's pre-planning pleasure as to copy out the whole T-Rex Cafe menu, AllEars is. Note: Kid's menu can be found here, and a link to the rest of the menus on property is on the upper left.

Mesozoic Mahi Mahi- This was my husband's dish, so I only had a taste. It was so delicious, however, that he had to chase me away. : "butter cracker and Parmesan crusted Mahi Mahi topped with Gulf shrimp and lemon shallot butter served with Raptor rice and roasted vegetables $24.99"

Lost World Chicken Salad Sandwich - This was very good, but not much better than I can do at home. The tarragon added a very nice touch, but I found that the almonds rather put me off the whole thing. : "Rotisserie chicken with tarragon, celery, onions, toasted almonds and mayonnaise, served on a croissant $12.99"

Chocolate Extinction- The menu calls this a chocolate fudge cake, but our waiter called it a brownie cake. Brownie cake is a much more accurate description of the texture and flavor, and boy, was it to die for! Which is probably why it's called "extinction". You'll see this at the end of the video below. : "A gigantic portion of chocolate fudge cake served with ice cream, fresh whipped cream drizzled with fudge and caramel sauces and sprinkled with Butterfinger crumbs. Enough for two or more. $14.99"

Birnbaum's Walt Disney World Dining Guide 2009

Amazon Price: $8.60 (as of 11/27/2009)Buy Now

A guide book for Walt Disney World dining, only? Yup.

While Birnbaum's other Walt Disney World guide books offer information on Disney dining, their dining guide is nothing but the restaurants, menus, meals, and food info at the World.

A must have for any Disney food enthusiast.

What Can You Do At T-Rex Cafe?

Besides having dinner (or lunch, or breakfast) in a very cool, prehistoric restaurant, there are lots of activities at T-Rex Cafe which are mainly aimed at kids.

Much like Rainforest Cafe, there's plenty of shopping available, but unlike Rainforest Cafe, that's not all that's there.

For starters, there's a Build-A-Dino by Build-A-Bear Workshop. In the Paleo Zone, you can excavate fossils (you can see this in one of the YouTube videos below), dig in a mine, and pan for precious stones, metals, and fossils.

Show Me More!

For those of you who aren't familiar with older Disney attractions, that line was from Jules Verne in TimeKeeper. It seems appropriate for a time travel show to introduce a time travel restaurant.

And for you hardcore Disney fans? Check out the top row on the right. That's Lou Mongello, author of the Disney Trivia books (and all around nice guy), and he's using "Diggin'" (In Dinoland) as the background music for his vid!

More Sites & Info About Disney World

T-Rex Cafe is an awesome place to eat while you're in Florida (or anywhere else they exist), but there's a lot more to a Walt Disney World vacation than just restaurants owned by Landry's!

There are rides, theme parks, water parks, mini-golf, outdoor activities such as fishing, speed boats, and parasailing, as well as golfing on PGA tour courses, and more. There are tons of Disney World tips and secrets, and that's just one vacation resort in the area! After all, there's also Sea World, Universal Studios, GatorLand, Holy Land, and a bunch of other theme parks in addition to the typical beach side resorts. Granted, with all of the activities you'll have to pay for on vacation, you'll certainly want to find supercheap Disney World tickets, but be supercareful when looking, because most of those tickets are scams. You can certainly find discount tickets that are legitimate, but they'll usually only save you $5-20 per ticket. You're better off saving on food or hotel expenses.

Hi Terri! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience! Aside from the noise and crowd, that wasn't my experience at all. Our food was delicious (aside from the chopped almonds in my chicken salad sandwich- I hate crunchy ingredients in a soft food), our service was wonderful, and we only mourned that we didn't have time to go back on our vacation.

It's possible that they were simply having a bad night, or perhaps quality has gone down since we were there. That does happen in a lot of restaurants- opening is awesome, but then a steady decline. There's also the matter of personal taste. My mom hates Macaroni Grill, but several of my friends absolutely love it!

I will give you a heads up for your next vacation, Landry's also owns Rainforest Cafe and Yak & Yeti, so if you didn't like T-Rex, you'll want to avoid those as well.

Seriously, Who wrote those reviews. The food was horrible. My 4 boys got the children's pizza and could not even eat it. I tasted it and it was like a bad microwave pizza. I had a bronco burger and ordered it medium and it was so well done it was hard to chew. The tomatoe soup was like tomato sauce from a can. We complained to the manager and was not even offered another item because they wanted our table for the massive line outside. I expected it to be loud and confusing but was very dissapointed by the food. We left and went next door to Mcdonalds just so our kids would not be hungry. The atmosphere is great so if you want to go for that just get an appitizer and go somewhere else for real food. This is NOT a Disney ran rest. It is ran by Landry's! This is important to know so you do not expect Disney quality!

That's awesome, Melissa! The pot pie, you say? I love pot pie- I may have to try that next time instead of the Mahi Mahi.

We just ate there on July 17, 2009. It was great! We all loved the food and the atmosphere. Two in our group got the chicken pot pie & it was HUGE and very good. My daughter liked the kid's pizza better there than at Rainforest. If I had to pick between Rainforest & T-Rex, I'd pick T-Rex all the way!

That is fantastic! Thanks so much for that info, I think that will come in very useful to a lot of people as long as the coupons last. :-)
