1. Stick to a consistent routine and schedule your study times. Avoid studying late one day and then the next day studying in the afternnon. Buy a planner and write down when you will study so you won't have any conflicting dates.

3. Take study breaks and do it in a different area. Walk around in a different room, listen to a little bit of music, or grab some brain food. Try to take a break every hour for at least ten minutes.

4. Avoid daydreaming. We are all guilty of this one, everybody has struggled with it at one time or another. Ask yourself questions about the subject that you are studying while you are studying it. This will help you to keep your mind focused.

Having trouble focusing on classroom lectures? Look over your notes on the previous lecture and read the course material that will follow the lecture so you have the main idea of what the teacher will cover. Show some interest, have an attentive expression and posture. This will help self-motivate you into internal interest. Sit in the front of the room to avoid disruptive classmates and listen and take notes.

Whatever location you choose to do your studying in it is important that you study in this same place all the time. Once you start to study here, it will become a focused and important place in your mind. Once you step into this area, your mind will know that it is time to get down to business. Pens, pencils, erasers, your calculator, all should be kept nearby so you you don't have to stop studying to find your supplies.

How do you find a name in a telephone book? You don't read anymore that necessary to find the name. Maybe you use your finger to help guide your eyes. This type of reading is known as scanning. Skimming uses the same type of skill mechanically but a different skill mentally. In scanning you know exactly what you are looking for; but in skimming you don't know what you are looking for.

Since you do not know what you are looking for while you are skimming, read the title, source, author, and any pictures. Then ask yourself: who, what, when, and where is this focusing on?
