Contents at a Glance
Snack
Best: Inca Peanuts
I had never heard of these, but they are available for purchase at various online sites and health stores.
Worst: Anything in Bar Form
They look yummy, but they are full of sugar!!
Metabolism Boosters
Best: Cayenne PepperYowzers is this stuff hot, but it is supposed to do the trick!
Worst: Energy Drinks
They may give you a temporary boost, but they are full of sugar and caffeine which damage your cells.
Cayenne Pepper
Packaged Food
Best: Whole Wheat PastaThis is what we try to use, even though it costs more. It has more fiber and is better for you than regular pasta.
Worst: Frozen Meals
These are high in fat and sugar. Plus they don't give your body the nutrients it needs.
If you are going to buy frozen meals, follow Dr. Oz's guidelines:
"Fat: Less than 4g per serving
Sodium: Less than 500 mg per serving
Gravy: None
Cheese: None (Cheese has both fat and salt. You can add the cheese yourself - but practice portion control.)
Only One Compartment: Frozen meals with more than one dividing compartment usually means vegetables you won't eat or an added dessert you shouldn't eat!
No Bigger Than Your Hand: Keep your portions under control."
Whole Wheat Pasta
Exercise
Best: LungesThese work your core and don't require any special equipment to do them. You can even do them during commercials and get stronger!
Worst: Sit-ups
You can hurt your back or seperate your stomach muscles more (if you've had a baby). Try holding a plank position instead.
Muscle Pain Relief from a Drug Store
Best: Heating Pad
Heat relaxes the muscles and takes away the pain.
Worst: Menthol Muscle Ache Cream
Don't overuse these creams as they can be toxic. Menthol hasn't been proven to help.
Heating Pad
Hot Flashes
Best: Sage
Research shows that using this every day for three months can help with menopause symptoms including hot flashes.
Worst: Evening Primrose Oil
There is no evidence that shows that this works.
Sage
Chest Congestion
Best: Cough Expectorant
Your body needs to get rid of phlegm, so this will thin the mucous so you can get better quicker.
Worst: Cough Suppressant
This lets the mucous stay in your body longer since you aren't coughing it up and makes you stay sicker longer.
Soap
taken from doctoroz.com
Best: Moisturizing Foaming Hand Soap with Olive Oil
Regular soap can kill germs. Olive oil is great for your skin.
Worst: Antibacterial Soap
This is usually what we use, but he said it leads to dry skin.
Constipation
Best: Probiotic Supplement
This helps your natural live cultures be restored in your GI system. Look for "broad spectrum" probiotics to help with digestion.
Worst: Laxative
These can be addictive!! Your body forgets how to digest on its own!
Probiotic Supplement
Relaxing Drink to Get a Good Night's Sleep
Best: Chamomile
It is relaxing--even the scent of it can help you relax. It is a natural sedative and anti-anxiety aide.
Worst: Wine
It can help you go to sleep faster, but when you wake up, you are unable to go back to sleep regularly. It shortens your REM sleep, so you don't feel as rested.
Chamomile
Sleep Position
Best: Sleeping on Your Right Side
Your heart will have extra room, so it doesn't have to work as hard. It also follows the natural curve of your spine. (Too bad I sleep on my stomach!)
Worst: Sleeping on Your Left Side
It compresses the heart and can lead to heart failure if you have a heart condition.
Air Quality
Best: Sleeping With a Humidifier
They circulate moisture and air, keeping your throat moist. It helps prevent bacteria from staying in your throat and making you sick. They keep your skin moist too! (I need one!!)
Worst: Sleeping With a Fan.
This dries out your throat thus making you thirsty at night, so you wake up more. It also dries out your throat and makes it so bacteria can stick and make you sick.
Humidifier
Herbal Supplement for Migraine
Best: Feverfew
This targets the cause of migraines which are the blood vessels that don't reach the brain. It helps the contriction of blood vessels. 1200 milligrams should work.
Worst: Chamomile
De-stress and relax with it. Migraines are not a result of needing to relax.
Feverfew
Herbal Supplement for Arthritis
Best: Chondroitin
Reduces pain and swelling by blocking enzymes that cause cartilage to breakdown. It can increase mobility. 1200 milligrams a day is good.
Worst: Arnica
It won't help your joints. This is topical and joint pain needs to be treated internally.
Chondroitin

Best: Korean Red Ginseng
It may help both genders. 600 milligrams should be taken, but watch for other drug interactions which might be dangerous. (Uh...yikes!)

- The worst things are sometimes so cheap you can't resist it when shopping-so I bump it up a notch, yes I watch Emerald on the food channel too, with spices that's good for our health. Little things like this makes packaged foods healthier and best of all they're cheap and easy on the budget. Thanks for a great article.
