Dr. Oz and Dr. Mercola Both Want to Help You
Dr. Oz and Dr. Mercola both offer a wealth of health information. Do you have a preference? And if so, who and why? Or better yet, do you think they are quacks? There are people out there who do. What about you? What is a Quack? Do you know?
This page is not intended to criticize either party, but a page that causes discussion about two people or things and how they differ...or don't.
As my username indicates, I have more than a casual interest in nutrition and health, and have been receiving emails from Dr. Mercola for some time, and have recently started watching the Dr. Oz show on television. According to one source on the web, he lives up here in my home State, Northern NJ. Both Oz and Mercola have lots of good to share in their own unique way, but is it always good? We'll take a look, and by the end of the page, you'll know what I feel about Dr. Oz, Dr. Mercola, and whether or not they are quacks, and you will have an opportunity to share what you think.

He's a real doctor with hospital privileges and he does surgery. Doesn't have any products to sell, just good adviice.

Mercola is an alarmist! He is constantly boasting about the intake of raw cheese, good luck finding the stuff. Of course his supplements are the best...and very expensive.
Oz is down to earth, understands some people do the best they can and tries to help within this framework.

Dr. Oz cares about our health and is a real doctor, surgeon, teacher. Mercola spreads fear on probably every product.

Not sure if they're quacks, but Mercola is most definitely a web spammer. In fact, he became famous by spamming other websites with spammy links to his own site, which manipulated Google's search algorithm such that he appeared at the top of search results... All because he is an avid spammer.
As for being a quack, if he's a spammer, my guess would be that he's also a quack. And yes, Dr. Mercola is MOST DEFINITELY a SPAMMER.

I'm not sure that I prefer either one. The one I don't really know anything about and I know the other (Dr. Oz) gives in accurate information from time to time. Which is of major concern. Like Dr. Phil, I think both should stick to their specialties, instead of trying to take on everything!

I highly respect both. I always go natural whenever possible and believe in prevention above all. That being said, Dr. Mercola turns me off because of his heavy marketing in his newsletters. I can not help but wonder about ulterior motives. Dr. Mercola is also a bit too extreme in some cases & I definitely DO NOT agree with his take on mental illness. Dr. Oz seems more realistic in his approach to overall good health.

I like them both. I have cancer and I am listening to any and all information out there. I do receive Dr. M's emails and have taken a couple of his products which I find very good. I am very pleased with Dr. Oz too, it is so hard to find medical doctors that will discuss any form of preventative care. I have 2 of the best doctors in Orange and at Cedars and they really wrap their heads around medical only and nothing about nutrition and preventative care. I commend Dr. Oz for doing both and wanting to be educated about holistic approaches rather than just pharmaceuticals. I like to listen to Dr. Mercola too and change my life style based on what I learn from these 2 doctors and more doctors that I have found to have good logical advice.

hcpstudent says:
I do not prefer one over the other. However, I believe that anyone who makes money out of their recommendations (and yes, Dr. Oz has his own line of products - sometimes the only one offering products no other health care professional has ever heard of!) can be considered a quack. I'd be curious to see research articles he bases his recommendations on. I always wonder why he doesn't link those "research articles".

I wish I had time to do a daily blog called "what I learned on dr oz today." it would be full of BS. He promotes too many (unnecessary) products and is pro gastric bypass (10 year weight loss avg is 30lbs, pretty sure eliminating pop and doughnuts would save you some trouble). And I'm quite offended by his HATE of animal products. What's your beef with red meat, Dr Oz? Lamb, Venison. Buffalo. Grass fed cattle. AND, why don't you ever feel it is necessary to site studies? Are we to stoopid to read studies and papers, we just need to take your word on it? I have more, but my thumb is tired.

He is not afraid of telling the truth regarding many issues that have to do with cdc. The government hides things & he exposes them. The big pharmaceutical companies pay people off & dr. mercola is not afraid to say it like it is on issues like vaccines & gmo's (monsanto). The soy industry has grown to such an alarming rate that you literally have to read everything because genetically modified soy is in almost everything on the shelves at your grocery store. I try to keep my children away from it to the best of my ability without them even realizing that I am doing it because I just do not buy products that have soy. My 9 yr old is aware of the fact that soy is not healthy unless it is ORGANIC fermented soy. Oh, & by the way Dr Mercolas products are wonderful.

STG says:
I tend to agree more with Dr. Mercola because of his emphasis on metabolic typing-- no one diet fits all. Dr Oz has good intentions and generally advocates eating whole foods. However, Dr Oz tends to push whole grains and fruits which can be very problematic for people who are glucose intolerant, prediabetic or diabetic. I wish Dr. Oz would individualize his dietary recommendations or specify caveats.

I dont know much about Dr. Oz, I am more familiar with Dr. Mercola. While its somewhat annoying Dr. Mercola is always pushing a product, his information seems thorough and is inline with what I believe in natural health care. I am curently working on my Ph.D in Natural Health, I will need to become more familiar with Dr. Oz, and others out there. Its about the health, not the money, not the fame, and not the name.

Dr. Oz gives some very misleading dietary advice. He sticks to conventional wisdom, which is outdated and proven wrong in so many instances. He should stick to cardiovascular issues and shut up about diets.
Dr. Mercola on the other hand is the polar opposite. I like Dr. M a lot and his advice bucks the mainstream.

I haven't seen Dr. Oz's show much. I really think Dr. Mercola is so right on in his articles. I have adopted several of his suggestions and am noticing a steady improvement in my overall health. Yes, he advertises his products alot, however, I think his products are superior to many I find in health stores. I have not been dissatisfied with any of his products yet, and that is saying a lot..

on the fence.... dr merc bec he is more naturopathic in his principals (ie treat the cause not symptoms), but he is ALWAYS trying to sell you something which gets annoying. 90 % of the articles include a link to his products. Dr oz is also has a very wholistic approach and does tend to focus on lifestyle interventions first, but as far as the people who are into natural health, you will probably not learn much form his show (oh wow blueberries have antioxidants, and gosh i should know my BP, and LDL levels...)... he is very compassionate, and i love how he interacts with patients.

What is a Quack?
Now for a bit about wacky quacky quackery.
What is Quackwatch?

Personally, when I started using herbs and other alternatives to medicine, it was over 20 years ago, before we had computers in our homes and sites like QuackWatch. I was quite angry to read some of the things found at this site when I first discovered it, quite certain that they were in cahoots with the medical community who did not want to lose their patients because they were getting better using things they grew in their garden, and by changing their bad eating and exercise habits.
I still feel this way, but have also come to realize that organizations like this keep people in practice accountable, keep us from going overboard, keeps balance.
Here's info on QuackWatch from Wikipedia, I'll let you decide.
"Quackwatch, Inc. is an American non-profit organization founded by Stephen Barrett that aims to "combat health-related frauds, myths, fads, fallacies, and misconduct" with a primary focus on providing "quackery-related information that is difficult or impossible to get elsewhere." Since 1996 it has operated the alternative medicine watchdog website, quackwatch.org, that advises the public on unproven or ineffective alternative medicine remedies. The site contains articles and other information criticizing many forms of alternative medicine."

- I haven't ever read anything that Dr. Oz has to say.
I do get Mercola's newsletter, but I ended up just sending it to my spam folder, I wasn't reading it. I think that he does have SOME valuable information, but I think he can be a bit of a crusader, and over-the-top at times, and makes me feel like EVERYTHING is going to kill me. I'd rather be limiting my exposure to my specific health issues or concerns I may have. I think he was bold to speak the truth on the so-called Swine Flu. I like a lot of what his pets page's vets have to say, and I like the attention spent on animal care, since our little furry friends are as sensitive, or more sensitive due to body size, as we are. But I don't read Mercola on a daily, weekly, or even monthly basis.
I feel Dr. Weil can be added to the list of valuable information doctors, although he has gone to the extremely commercial side in the past several years, I feel his site is very "hands-off" for him and has content under his name only a significant portion of the time. Ghost writers are fine, just not what I like when I go to a site for a specific person's opinion and thoughts.
Great lens, good info for people who are not aware of these guys, or are aware and just need an outside opinion to help keep them grounded.

His reports on vitamin D led me to take it and give it to my children frequently, and always as soon as someone starts coughing/sneezing, and it works wonderfully.
