Dr Sun Yat-sen portraitSun Yat-sen (12 November 1866 - 12 March 1925) was a Chinese revolutionary and political leader. As the foremost pioneer of Nationalist China, Sun is frequently referred to as the Father of the Nation of Republic of China. Sun played an instrumental role in inspiring the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty, the last imperial dynasty of China, which began in October 1911. He was the first provisional president when the Republic of China (ROC) was founded in 1912 and later co-founded the Kuomintang (KMT) where he served as its first leader. Sun was a uniting figure in post-Imperial China, and remains unique among 20th-century Chinese politicians for being widely revered amongst the people from both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Sun credited a line from Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, "government of the people, by the people, for the people," as an inspiration for the Three Principles. He wanted to achieve a western style democracy for the people of China, and actively pursued the means to do this by negotiating western aid to achieve these goals. The huge western commercial interests in China at the time influenced their governments into refusing financial aid to the fledgling democracy, as they wanted to continue the exploitation of China by reinstating the feudal emperor (does this sound a familiar scenario). As a result, Sun Yat-sen was forced to rely on the USSR to try and achieve his goals.
