I wonder if Drabble has its orgins even earlier than Monty Python. In some very old school readers - dating 1920 or earlier - there used to be extremely short pieces of fiction included with the longer pieces. Most famous example: "The World's Shortest Ghost Story. Two men were sitting in a train carriage. One man looked up from his newspaper and said 'Do you believe in ghosts?'. 'No' said the other man, and promptly disappeared." (Presumably, the man who disappeared was a ghost). And the concept of a short story of that length (not-length?) may have come from epigrams - complete poems consisting of no more than two lines. Eg: Wit is nature to advantage dress'd/ What oft' was thought but ne're so well expressed. Not a bad motto for Drabble writers!

Drabble is new to me. It would be an excellent writing exercise to try.

I've seen this term on Twitter but didn't know what it meant. Thanks for clearing that up!

I write Haiku so I think I might have a go at a Drabble. i have to confess that it is a new word to me. Very interesting lens.

Just learned another new thing on Squidoo today, thank you...

I really enjoy Microfiction! However, I don't appreciate the 100 word restriction of Drabble. I mean, the challenge of writing an extremely short, yet complete story is enough without the creative restriction of the word limit!! Great lens!

Excellent lense! Thanks. I hope this message didn't go through more than once. Having problems with Squidoo glitch.

Hehe... I try to do this, but I end up getting so into it that I write 3+ pages... xD

This has to be incredibly hard to do and must require numerous rewrites! I can't shut my mouth long enough to only write 100 words!

At the Joy of Writing we have been playing with drabbles for th past two weeks. It is a tough little form, but easier on a computer. Have fun with it!

Wow! 100 Words! That's some strict limit. Talk about being concise. A great practice for eliminating all unnecessary words (like Poe talked about).

Thanks for your LOTD congrats. I really appreciate it. It's my first LOTD in over 3 years at Squidoo.

Heh. I was trying to think of a good topic to write on, thought, "drabbles!" and checked to see if anyone had written a lens on them.

Sure enough, someone did, and it's you!

Drabbles have really taken off in livejournal and other journal-based communities, because they fit on a single computer screen, and allow for quick browsing. (Even literate web users are notorious for short attention spans).

They're definitely a challenge, like haiku, and can be stunning. I've written many to help me learn brevity. I'm still learning!

I also coined a term that is starting to spread: a tribble, a 300-word drabble.

I've written some flash fiction but Drabble is a new term for me. It would be fun to try. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the exact word count. With my luck, I would end up with 101 words.
    Great lens

I love Flash Fiction, and writing Drabble or my favorites, the '55 worder' is not as easy as it looks. But, these stories can make great springboards for larger works. 5*

Another great lens. I've never heard of drabble. I am definitely going to try this after I get through nanowrimo next month. 5 stars to you.

Popped my head in and found that they'd already started.
Angie was there. And, as expected, she was crying uncontrollably.
I keep telling them to take his photo off the piano.
