This convention is HUGE!
A science fiction, fantasy, cyberpunk, steampunk, punk, gaming, anime... heck, it's an anything and everything convention! If you think nerds and geeks will get together over it, they will, and it's here!
From fairy wings to Star Trek, Corsets to Kilts, Full-body Fursuits to "I can't believe that's legal!", Wheel of Time to the Church of the SubGenius, Comic Books to Webcomics, Dragon*Con has it all and isn't afraid to show it!
Love Gaming? From 24-hour LARPs to board games, your favorite miniatures to Fluxx, Chrononauts, and other Looney Labs favorites, or maybe you just really, really like that hot chick from the Shadowmoor game who's just lying on the floor in a skintight outfit, the gaming floor will give it to you!
Love Comics? Comic books, webcomics, webcomic artists willing to draw for you, panels on comics, or just your favorite character-oriented merchandise... we've got it!
Maybe you just want to see all the costumes? Well bring your camera and LOTS of film, because on Saturday, the Dragon*Con parade will bring EVERYBODY and their costumes out of the woodwork, from rows upon rows of stormtroopers to fairies, belly dancers, more Jack Sparrow clones than you could shake a stick at, and lots of other obscure cosplays... (oh, and, ah... there are other costumes that tend to appear once all the kids are asleep, know what I mean?)
Looking for that perfect accessory? The dealer's den has masks, wings, kilts, leatherwork, jewelry, and all sorts of other goodies that will bring out the inner cosplayer in you!
Whatever you're interested in, I know Dragon*Con has it, and it's just waiting for you!

Top Ten Convention Survival Supplies
- A Budget! You've got to figure out how to cover your transportation, your lodging, and your food, no questions asked. I don't care how much you want that replica sword, if you can't afford to keep your basics covered, you can't afford it!
- A Water Bottle! Noticed how those Georgia storms have been knocking out basic public services like power and water lately? Do YOU really want to risk being unable to reach a bathroom or water fountain when you need it most? (We're not even mentioning how crowded the bathrooms are likely to be as is...)
- A Camera! We want pictures of your Dragon*Con experience! And hey, if you see a really good costume, you'll want to be able to tell people about it...
- A Reusable Market Bag! Bringing your own shopping bag not only conserves the bags (and money) of the vendors you're purchasing from, it'll also help you stand out (let alone if you get separated from your merchandise...).
- Business Cards! Don't think just "promoting your business / webcomic / fanclub", think "I might never see this person again unless I offer them some way to contact me!" If you're an artist, consider some Moo Minicards with glimpses of your latest works!
- A Cell Phone! Okay, you really shouldn't have to be told to have one on hand, but if you're coordinating with others, it's the ONLY way to keep in touch across multiple hotels and who knows how many people! Just make sure your phone is set to something discreet so you don't piss off congoers around you...
- A Pad and Pen (or Pencil!) Might as well face it -- you'll need to write down things like room numbers, email addresses, and other important on-the-fly details, so have these handy! Also, if you decide to get an autograph on the spot, it pays to have your own materials on hand!
There will be walking.
Be Prepared.Good Shoes! There will be walking. Be prepared. make sure to bring a new pair of socks for each day of the con (so your sweat doesn't carry over). You may even want to being two pairs of shoes (one hard, one soft) so if your feet start killing you, you can switch to the other pair!
- CASH! Not all of these vendors can take credit cards and checks... You'll want at least some minimum amount of cash on you at all times to be able to get things from vending machines and some of the smaller food vendors!
- DEODORANT! And shampoo, and soap... shower at least once a day while you're at the convention! There will be lots of walking, and lots of hot Atlanta weather, and you will be surrounded by lots of people... so please, be considerate!
- A Handheld Fan! Don't let your health suffer just because you're shopping in one of the stuffier rooms or packed into a small panel space! A small fan is almost nothing to carry and you'll have the appreciation of every fanboy who uses it! (Bonus Tip Sent in by Tardisian!)
Are We Missing an Item?
Add it to the list so nobody else forgets it!
Entertainment-book, iPhone, etc.
If you line up to see a really popular celebrity o more...1 point
And Don't Forget Your Manners!
There will be MANY people here, some of whom aren't as thin and mobile as you. You will be in close quarters with them. (You may not be as socially adept as you think you are, either!)
Please take the stairs when possible, don't argue with the staff members, and make sure you bathe so other confolk don't have to smell you when they squeeze by.
Parents? Leave the baby strollers at home. There are other ways to carry your babies that take up far less space. (Try a sling, seriously!)

Lola says:
Yes, but mine and my boyfriend's roommates just informed me that they're not going. We don't want to be stuck with the whole hotel bill ($212/night), so if anyone is in need of lodging, please contact me. We have the hotel room (in the Hilton) from Thurs. to Monday. If we can only get one more person, the bill will be split three ways. If we can get two more, the bill will be split four ways. My name's Lola and my e-mail is ceruleanloster@yahoo.com

In The Know says:
DragonCon's Space and Science tracks are very cool but it's liquid nitrogen cool. As in liquid nitrogen ice cream; not frozen nitrogen ice cream. They're the tracks that are also putting on, The 1st Mad Scientist's Ball, Sunday night at 10pm in Regency V at the Hyatt. ArcAttack supplying the lights and sounds. Who is ArcAttack (http://arcattack.com/dragoncon.php), singing tesla coils, baby! Those who saw them last year know how awesome they are and they've added more sounds (drums!) and expanded their playlist. Rumor has it that wearing an ArcAttack t-shirt to the Mad Sci Ball gets you something extra! Everyone should also check out 'Beer Snobs II' in the Science track room at 10pm Saturday night.
How do I know all this stuff - I work for the Space and Sciences tracks too. I've been working those tracks for years!

I've been going for years and I still do something completely new every year! Bob Asprin (RIP) once sang to me, Ted Cassidy scanned a crowd and helped me find a missing friend, Peter Mayhew loves to chat about his action figure collection, and David Carradine really does walk like that.

This will be my 3rd year in a row going to DragonCon. I can't wait for the fun and shameless debauchery. Seeing all the awesome costumes and partying for 4 straight days is what it's all about!

Tardisian says:
This will be my eighth year. Sure, some things have changed; some that have been tried just haven't worked out very well, but many things (like spreading the evening events throughout at least three hotels)I think will work to everyone's enjoyment.
I'm looking forward to seeing friends I only see this once a year; making new acquaintances, and seeing all the beautiful costumes once again. And meeting James "The Amazing" Randi!!

I'll have to pass...
EelKat says:
ooooh.... I want to go, but travel is a problem for me, I can't go anyplace that requires overnight travel due to running a farm/shelter, so I'm limited to local cons only.
I've heard so many great things about DragonCon though, I hate to miss it :(
It'd be the perfect place for me to wear my Lord sesshomaru costume once it's finished, thoough.

I've got to miss it this year, but only because I just had a baby. I've gone for six or seven years straight - it's among the best times a weekend can provide!

Dragon Con has really changed I have been to several but 97 was my last one. Glad to see the fun lingers on. I had to leave when most games I was interested vanished in the 90's

Hey! Are You On Staff?
Tell us what you're doing at the convention! Not only do we bet it's really interesting, but people deserve to see how much work goes into making this con great!
(and that whole "Work 20 hours and the convention is free" thing can't hurt, right?)
From Wikipedia's Article on Dragon*Con
Dragon Con (also Dragon*Con) is a North America multigenre convention, held annually in Atlanta, Georgia. The 30,000-plus-member convention encompasses four hotels in downtown Atlanta near Centennial Olympic Park, and is hosted by a 1500-member volunteer staff. Dragon Con has hosted the 1990 Origins Game Fair and the 1995 North American Science Fiction Convention (NASFiC). Like many World Fantasy Conventions, it is operated by a private corporation, and was the subject of considerable controversy by a small segment of SMOF fandom in 1995 [http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/mglyer/110/index.html "Smofs Give Two Thumbs Down" (link broken due to Compuserve closure - try Google's cache)] when it was scheduled on Labor Day Weekend, often a date for domestic Worldcons. Since its inception in 1987, it has raised thousands of dollars each year for local and national charities.

- Under the what to bring section, I'd add in either a hand-held or battery-operated fan. Gets pretty stuffy in the lower-level or smaller panel rooms!
