Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke - Great Book for Young Readers
Funke's books are filled with magic, wonder and fanciful creatures. Her books include Thief Lord, Dragon Rider, Inkheart and the latest, Inkspell.
Dragon Rider was the first book I read with my son (6 yrs). He loved to listen to the story as it unfolded and always wanted another chapter. The story starts out with a talking rat, a dragon, a brownie and a quest. Along the way they meet up with a young orphan boy, Ben. The quest takes them half way around the world where they meet up with other fantasy creatures and are pursued by a deadly enemy they don't know is there. The friends learn about loyalty, forgiveness and working together.
If you like to dive into the hidden meanings of books, this has second coming, redemption, devil, separation from heaven, hiding in heaven, good triumphs over evil. That is for a much longer essay though.
Cornelia Funke is a great writer of children's fantasy stories. This one has all the excitement of Harry Potter without all the dark, scary parts. If your child isn't quite ready for the world of Harry Potter, this book is a perfect one to share with him.

Along the way Firedrake and his faithful brownie friend, Sorrel, meet an orphan boy, Ben, who chooses to go with them on their quest.
By leaving the safety of the valley Firedrake unknowingly alerts an enemy so dangerous that his very exhistence hangs in the balance. With Ben, Sorrel, and a few other friends they meet along the way the group make their way across deserts, oceans, and cities to find their way to the Rim of Heaven where a surprise awaits them.

Cornelia Funke
Cornelia Funke was born in 1958 in Dorsten Westphalia Germany. As a Social Worker she discovered kids love of stories and went on to become an illustrator.
She started writing when she was 35 years old and quickly became a success in Germany. She has since written 40 books of fantasy. A series of books called Ghosthunter are early chapter books for those children who are beginning their reading adventures. Others like Dragon Rider and Inkheart are for older children who love fantasy stories.
Her books are filled with beautiful illustrations and her words paint a picture for the reader of the surrounding landscapes. In her stories the reader meets fairies, dwarves, djins, dragons, and magic around every corner.
Theif Lord has already been made into a wonderful movie and Inkheart is set to be released in 2008.
