DragonFable Free Online RPG

Ranked #647 in Games, #22,355 overall

A Single-player/ MMO RPG

DragonFable is a Flash-based online RPG. The style is 2D anime fantasy with rich colors. The interface is simple and game-play is casual. Although free, DragonFable is much more fun with a Dragon Amulet upgrade.

It is difficult to call DragonFable a single-player game. Players can interact, after a fashion, during special events in which the efforts of many players impact the game. Also, DragonFable has a player-versus-AI player arena. PvAI allows players to fight against others with the computer running the opponent instead of live interaction.

DragonFable was created by Artix Entertainment which also created Adventure Quest, MechQuest, and AdventureQuest Worlds MMO.

Upgrades, Prices, and Pay Methods

The standard upgrade for DragonFable is a single Dragon Amulet (another name for upgraded account) for $19.95 (USD). This includes Dragon Coins for buying exclusive items.

The ultimate upgrade includes Dragon Amulets for all of your characters for $29.95. It also includes 200 Dragon Coins for all characters.

By adding $5 at the time of the upgrade the player can get an additional 2,000 Dragon Coins.

Dragon coins can be purchases separately for $9.95 for 2,000 and $19.95 for 5,000.

There are additional upgrades for long-time players that include the Doom Knight armors.

Payment is accepted in PayPal, credit card, and even mail-in.

All payments are one-time only. There are no monthly fees for DragonFable.

When you upgrade in DragonFable you get two free classes in AdventureQuest Worlds, Artix Entertainment's popular MMO.

1: The World of Lore

Lore Proper, Zones, and Special Areas

DragonFable World of LoreDragonFable is set in the world of Lore and is made of several different areas. The most basic types of areas are Lore Proper, Zones, and Special Areas.

Lore Proper is a continuous zone made up of Oaklore, Falconreach, and Robina's Zone (Surewood Forest). You can walk from the beginning cut scene all the way to the deepest depths of Surewood Forest in the east. Oaklore is the beginner's zone. Here is where new players and characters will begin to earn their "bones." Falconreach is the second zone players will reach and is the most central zone of the game.

Outside Lore Proper is Warlic's Zone. This is the next largest zone and is appropriate for characters levels 9 to 15. Warlic's zone has a variety of areas, quests, and special zones.

The other major zones are themed. Each is somewhat autonomous in that they have a central theme, a central NPC, and can be set as a home to which a player can teleport. These zones are:

Osprey Cove: The pirate's zone. Here a player can find the pirate class and several quests.

The Sandsea: The ranger's zone. Here players can find the ranger class and quests.

Amityvale: The spooky zone. A great place to go to kill undead. This is a rather large zone.

Shadow of the Wind Village: The ninja zone. Players can find the ninja class here.

Lymcrest: The village of dwarves. No special classes, only a labyrinth quest.

Necropolis: Set in an area of Doomwood, Necropolis is an underground city of the undead. The Paladin class will train here.

Dragesvard: A Norse town and home of Galanoth, the dragonslayer.

Popsprocket: The Gnome city. This is where the Technomancer trainer is located.

Special zones do not have the full depth of other zones. These include Sunbreeze Grove, where one can find the DragonLord class; the 100 Room Dungeon, which has the... well, the 100 room dungeon; Aeries Battlespire, where one can get into fights with other (artificial) players; Dr. Voltabolt's Challege, where one can build a mechanical tog; and others.

1.1: Changing Landscape

One of the more unique aspects of DragonFable is that the landscape will change with the completion of certain quests. The very first one was released in December, 2008, for the town of Dragesvard.

At the beginning of the chain of quests in Dragesvard, the town is deserted. But after the completion of all the quests, Dragon Amulet holders will see the streets filled with townspeople. If all goes well, this landscape-altering will be a part of other quests and towns.

2: Character Classes

DragonFable NinjaCurrently, there are three primary character classes in DragonFable: the Rouge, Warrior, and Mage.

The Rogue's main weapon is the dagger and the main attributes are Strength and Endurance.

The Warrior's main weapons are the sword and axe with the main attributes being Strength and Endurance.

The Mage's main weapon is the staff, but a mage can also efficiently wield a dagger. The main attributes of a Mage are Intelligence and Endurance.

There are eight advanced classes; the Guardian, Ninja, Pirate, Ranger, Necromancer, Paladin, Death Knight, Dragonslayer, and the DragonLord.

The Guardian class is available to Adventure Quest Guardians. A Guardian Blade is needed to use half of the Guardian skills in addition to the Guardian armor.

The DragonLord class is available to Dragon Amulet holders. A DragonLord can customize his adult dragon and wear the DragonLord armor. DragonLord armor is further customizable with different colors and upgrade.

The Technomancer class uses magiscience for abilities and is available at Popsprocket.

The DoomKnight is a special rare armor. It costs extra money and requires a long membership.^Page Top

3: Stats

DragonFable StatsDragonFable stats are strength, intelligence, dexterity, endurance, charisma, and luck.

Strength (STR) determines how much damage a character does with a melee weapon and is essential to warriors and rogues. It is useless for mages.

Dexterity (DEX) determines how much damage a character does with ranged weapons, like Wild Daggers, Throw, and the Pirate parrot attack. Not generally useful right now.

Intelligence (INT) determines how much damage a character does with magic and is essential to mages. Warriors and rogues should also slightly increase INT to use special skills more often.

Endurance (END) gives extra hit points and is useful to all classes.

Charisma (CHA) is essential to those who wish to train up their pet dragon. It helps a little with pet training and is used in the pet quest.

Luck (LUK) increases many different rolls a little bit. Could be useful to some but not a priority. Luck has an effect on the baby dragon quests.

Stats can be trained at town hall, the building with the coin sign one screen south (down) of the Falconreach main screen.

The stat trainer can also reset all stats for 1,000 gold. This comes in handy when you want to focus on a stat that you hadn't.

Since DragonFable is constantly evolving, more stats may be added later.

4: Monsters

DragonFable Anthropomorphic RatThere are many different types of monsters in DragonFable. This includes elementals, undead, beasts, goblins, and renegades. Each monster, however, belongs to one or more of four basic types.

Basic monsters have a fixed level. The level of the monster varies only in relationship to the dungeon or quest in which it is found.

Scaled monsters have a level that depends on the player character's level. For example, it can be the PC's level or the PC's level +2.

Boss monsters are usually encountered at the end of a quest or dungeon and can be fixed or scaled. Some quests have multiple bosses (sub-bosses?) and most bosses have a henchman or two.

Titan monsters are giants that are fought by PC's on dragonback.

Because of scaling, a monster's level is less important than the dungeon/ quest level in which the monster is found. Dungeons tend to be created for specific levels or are scaled. The same monster could be a level one in a level one dungeon and level 29 elsewhere because it is in a scaled dungeon.

5: Pets and Companions

DragonFable Friends Currently in DragonFable, a player has two friend slots and one pet/ companion slot for with to bring help while adventuring.

It's never a bad idea to pick up a couple friends before adventuring. Some quests have a guest friend that will battle with you and will take slot A. So if you bring just one friend, make sure they are in slot B so the guest won't take their place.

There are four friends available to all adventurers. The first is Ash, a level one dragonslayer who is found in Falconreach. The second friend is Artix, the Paladin. Artix is level three and is found on the hill in Amityvale (one screen east [right] and one screen north [up] from the Amityvale main screen). Both can be brought along together as well as a pet/ companion.

Robina the Hood is found in Surewood Forest and has the option of taking companion slot A or B. Also giving that option is Valencia, the rare item hunter. Valencia is found way, way east [right] in Falconreach in an area called "That A' Way."

Oh, there's also the pet rock, Geo. It's by the Guardian Tower in Falconreach. It's just a rock...

There are a variety of pets and a variety of ways to get pets. The easiest way is to visit the pet shop in Falconreach and buy a pet. Pets can also be built or traded for Defender Medals (see DragonFable Crafting: Pets).

Baby dragons take up a pet slot. They are more powerful than most pets and can be trained for special attacks and effects.

6: Equipment

Lots and lots of stuff!

DragonFable Weapons ShopDragonFable has many different items. Here is a brief list of some types of items:

Daggers, Swords, and Staves are the most common types of weapons. Also, there are tridents, axes, and hammers.

Necklaces have a variety of uses. Right now, the two most common necklaces are Defender necklaces and Thursday's necklace.

Helms, hats, and masks are in great variety. They add to the look of a character, along with capes.

Capes and wings come in decorative-only and more useful varieties. Capes come in a variety of colors. Currently there are only two kinds of wings.

Rings abound and can be random drops in quest, bought, or trade for Defender Medals. The Lantern Ring is thought the be the most useful but the Dragon Defender Rings are powerful stat boosters.

Belts cannot be seen but abound throughout the game. The best place to find one free is the Cave quest, given by Ash.

Stackable items are usually used to build items or trade for items. Defender's Medals, scrap metal, and fire gems are examples.

Collectables are items that have no value but to sell them. Stuffed animals and espresso makers are examples and usually fetch 500 gold each.

Eggs are rare and are associated with special events. The first egg hunt gave us the tog, and excellent and ever-faithful pet. The second egg hunt (meteor hunt, actually) gave us the Core DemiCodex, a unique weapon.

Rare items can be of any type but are usually available once. When they are no longer available, you can't get them for a long time- if ever.

6.1: Trinkets

DragonFable Trinket ButtonTrinkets are DA only items. They give a small bonus when equipped. In February, 2009, the combat engine for DF was redone to allow trinkets to have combat effects.

During combat, you will see a box on the right hand side just above the action bar. This will show the trinket's effect if it has one.

7: Quest types

Variety is the spice of life

DragonFable QuestsDragonFable quests and dungeons come in different varieties. Here's a description of the most common:

Scaled quests adjust to a player's level.

All Level quests have tiers that adjust to a player. For example, level 1 to 9 PCs would face a level 3 monster; level 10 to 20 PCs would face a level 13 monster.

Static dungeons always have the same layout.

Random dungeons change every time and include the 100 Room Dungeon and Thursday's Crypt. Visit the Official Mapping Technology Page for hints on mapping the dungeons.

Field quests involves defeating a field of enemies to complete the quest.

Chain quests follow a chain of events that need to be completed in order.

Special events usually have a field quest and a Dragon Amulet side-quest. Special events are a cooperative effort of all players and end when a goal is reached.

7.1: ArchNight

DragonFable AshThe ArchNight quests are a unique opportunity to adventure in DragonFable because you take on the persona of the young squire, Ash. You play Ash and take him on adventures. You have an opportunity to explore the world of Lore through Ash's eyes (to a limited extent).

There have been several times in DragonFable in which players could take control of an NPC for limited quests or engagements. However, the ArchNight story arc is very extensive when compared to these other NPC adventures.

After starting the Ash quest chain, the player will be able to access Ash through the character control panel.

8: Houses

A place to hang your hat.

DragonFable Spooky DoorDragon Amulet holders can purchase a house, decorate it, select its location, and have others view the house. A small selection of house items are available for gold or Dragon Coins.

One very important house item to note is the Armor Closet, which costs 1,000 Dragon Coins. This house item allows players to quickly switch class armors without having to travel all over Lore.

A house can be used as a Home Town setting, which is the default location for the character.

Houses come with 20 inventory slots. That is, you can buy 20 things total. Each additional inventory slot ranges from 50 to 100 gold depending on how much you buy at once.

You can purchase an alternate location for your house with gold or Dragon Coins. The default location is Falconreach. A location takes an inventory slot.

9: Player Cooperation

When a challenge seems insurmountable

DragonFable CyseroThere are certain quests, challenges, and Easter egg hunts in DF that take the entire community to solve. Although these challenges can be done alone, it is much quicker to use the DF forums for help. Some quests, like the hunt for Greg (September, 2008), were created with the forums in mind.

Another resource for helping with special challenges are the DragonFable design notes. Using this update log will give you information about special challenges and give clues for solutions.

10: Holiday Events

DragonFable MogloweenDragonFable has in-game holiday events that parallel real holidays widely celebrated in the United States. These holidays have special quests, treats, and holiday-themed equipment. Here's a list of some of the events:

Friday the 13th This event means an undead invasion of some kind. Doom Weapons sometimes get a buff.

Frostval A Christmas-themed event that runs from mid-December to the beginning of the new year. Players get special presents they can open.

Heroes Heart Day A Valentines-themed event that runs during Valentines week.

Talk Like a Pirate Day A pirate-themed holiday that usually has a special pirate shop. Weekend of September 19th.

Mogloween A Halloween event that has players doing trick or treating for candy that can be turned in for equipment.

11: Professions

There are three professions in DragonFable: forging, alchemy, and fishing. The forging skill allows players to build their own weapons. It is leveled up through a funny little mini-game. The forging skill is needed to continue to evolve Doom Weapons. See the DragonFable Forged Items spreadsheet for particulars about weapons and needed items.

The alchemy skill boosts your in-game potions. By leveling up the skill, players will have more potent mana and health positions. This profession is leveled up by a two-step process: first, forage for the herbs you need to level up, next, play a short memory mini-game or tracing game to actually level up. See the DragonFable Alchemy Reagent Map for locations of herbs.

Players who pay 1,000 gold for the Angler armor can go fishing. Players level up with the fishing skill as they successfully make catches. They can view their prizes in an aquarium.

12: User-created Quests

Build your own DF story!

In March of 2011, DragonFable added a very limited user-created content (UCC) system. As time goes by, this system will expand with addition of more elements added.

The ultimate goal of the UCC is to allow players to create unique, fully-developed quests and stories including the use of NPCs and cut-scenes.

Currently players can test the UCC by making simple maps and placing one of three types of monsters. The UCC does not save and cannot be shared. This is a brand new system and may take a long time to develop.

13: Character ID Numbers

There are three cases in which knowing another player's character ID number comes in handy. The first and most obvious is PvP. You can let the system pick someone at random to battle or use the ID number of another character. This is handy because you can find easier-to-defeat characters to win more quickly.

Several quests and challenges allow you to input character ID numbers to help you. You want to use characters that are about the same level as you so the quest isn't to difficult.

More uncommon, you might want to visit other peoples' houses to see what they have. You need the ID number to go to specific houses.

Visit this page to get user-submitted character ID numbers.

Poll- Game Additions

There's a lot to do in DragonFable but grinding levels and PvP can get tiresome. What would like to see added to the game? The list is not all-inclusive, so leave feedback if I should add something.

Thanks for the info. Started playing after playing AQW for a while. Think I'll be playing DF more often. Really like your ID# registry page.

Um, the one about Rogue's main attributes are Strength and Endurance- I think it should be Dex and Endurance, Rogue's tend to have high defense and with Dex the opp would have a lower attack rate- say a warrior trying to use a triple attack- high dex would only allow one of those attacks through.
