Dragons indeed have a strong symbolic meaning especially in Asian culture. I like them a lot. It is quite interesting that dragons can be used in both ways: good and bad. If they represent something bad there are always slayed by a hero which means that good has beaten evil. But on the other side, like you mentioned in your lens, they can be good creatures too. In this way THEY are heroes and are praised by people.
Either way they are mighty creatures!
Great lens, I like it a lot ;)

"Dragons Get Killed by Heroes", what a powerful statement, it made me a little sad....we should find another way to the treasures we seek without 'slaying the dragon"! Such a beautiful presentation!
  • jptanabe Dec 3, 2011 @ 6:38 pm | delete
Yes, I agree. It makes me sad too.

Your knowledge in the niche of magical and mythical creatures is fantastic and I am really appreciating the way you write about them as well. I continue to stay fascinated and even more so reading through your lenses. Bookmarked this one as well. Good stuff thank you very much for putting it all down for others to read. Take care.

I love Dragons too! I think they are wonderful. I think dragons are so universal in both ancient cultures and in modern culture because we have had such a long history with them. I read a really good article a few years ago about a theory of the origin of dragon myths that said that they are based on ancient humans interactions with dinosaurs. Could be. After all, in Texas a few years ago, they found human footprints right next to and in some cases inside the foot prints of dinosaurs that had been fossilized in an ancient layer of mud that had turned to shale. Another theory I've heard says that dragons and many other mythical creatures are based on alien visitors. Kind of like the movies Outlander, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Stargate. My favorite dragons though are the ones in the D&D games and books. I'm a big fan of them. I also love the story of Sigmund and Fafnir. One of the better of the classic dragon stories that I've read. The way Sigmund kills Fafnir in the original version seems quite plausible.

It never ceases to amaze me how many great lenses you have. I love dragons, I started a dragon lens ages ago but I've never finished it. What is it about dragons that captures our imagination?

Wondertful pictures and a great topic for a lens. Beautifully crafted and nicely documented.

Just like mcochs I think of dragons negatively. I guess it's due to the influence from Hollywood movies.
  • mcochs Nov 6, 2010 @ 6:29 pm | delete
Interesting lens! I sort of always thought of them as the bad guys!

According to Chinese folk culture, dragon is one of the four divine creatures, different from what we have seen in western movies and books.
  • jptanabe Nov 5, 2010 @ 8:59 am | delete
Yes, indeed, the Chinese dragon is a very different creature from the western dragon.

I'm also born in Year of the Dragon, and so was my partner and son. Unfortunately, my daughter was born in Year of the Dog, which is supposed to be the least compatible sign. And I admit --- she does have the ability to bring out my dragon tendencies. :-)

If the adage, "Anything that is imaginable should be possible in Time" is true, then dragons may have existed in the past and perhaps may come to be in the distant future. Alas! For deagon-lovers, they don't exist now except in the expanse of their imaginations. Great lens and wonderful pictures.
