Mythological Favorites
Dragons and fairies have to be the two most well known and loved mythological creatures in all of story telling exsistence. Dragons are my husbands favorite. Strong, manly, firebreathing, protectors. And fairies are my favorite, the more gentle, delicate and magical winged creatures.
These creatures first rose out of ancient fairy tales in the Egyptian, Babylonian and Sumerian periods. In most myths from that time dragons were considered evil human ravaging creatures, unlike fairies.
Then in later times in books like the Yellow Fairy Book by Andrew Lang(1894) they were said to be helpful and kind creatures. And protectors like the fairies.
Today dragons and fairies are present to us in many forms. In books like Eragon or Eldest, and movies like Dragon Heart, and Tinkerbell. We even see them in tons of other ways like video games, collecitbles, novelty items and of coarse tattoos. They are now in their own category when it comes to art.

Most popular dragons
European dragons come from many different places. They are seen in Roman mythology, Germanic mythology, Celtic mythology, Slavic mythology, Iberian mythology, and even Italian mythology. In most of these popular myths, the dragon is a four legged, scaly, fire breathing lizard like creature. In most cases they say he is an evil greedy creature who guards and keeps all of his treasure for him self. Most dragon stories like this date back to the Dark Ages. The period around the 15th century medieval times.

Oriental Dragons also known as the Chinese dragon have been known to be a symbol of the Chinese Emperor and also sometimes used as the national emblem of China in the West. There are Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese and Turkic dragons. The dragon in China is a symbol of power and strength. Today in more modern times the dragon is mostly used for decorative purposes. The Chinese dragon is especially used for Chinese New Years traditions.

Slaying of the Dragon
Since in most myths about dragons the dragon is the evil, then there has to be the good or the heroine. In most cases it is a sword weilding, armor sporting, brave knight. Today's nights in shinning armor only dream of actually slaying the dragon. They find joy in the hobby of sword collecting. Some of the most popular swords would have to be the amazing Samurai swords and the fancy Medieval swords. Get Your Own Dragon Samurai Sword

Dragons and Fairies
Once were real....or just a Myth?
The stories have been told for so many years about these mythical creatures. A lot of people believe because the myths came from so many different places around the globe, before we had global communication as we do. Then maybe there is some truth in these myths. Maybe these are over exaggerated stories of actual creatures that did once exist. What do you think?

Good Ole Irish Fairies!!

Have you heard the story of the Irish fairies. They were known to dance around toadstools, mushrooms. Which might be why we see a lot of fairies and mushrooms in art. Not all the fairies in Irish folklore are little and happy. There is the story of the Banshee. This fairy was not known to be evil but her cries warned you that you were close to death. I guess this isn't a fairy I might want to meet anytime soon. She has many names like the Lady Of Death and the Woman Of Peace. She is not the typical fairy most think of.
Now for the better known more typical fairies, we have the legends of the Sidhe ("Shee") are much happier stories. These stories coming from the British Isles tell about how these fairies are like angels, sent to watch over us. These are the fairies that make up cute little fantasy clipart. They are the little people, who are there to help. They live in your average garden or sometimes even in the waves of the ocean. It would be nice if this myth were true. And yes these are the fairies found dancing around toadstools also.
