How to draw Halloween pumpkin with Gimp

Halloween is time for pumpkins. We can find them everywhere.

There are small and big pumpkins, funny and scary pumpkins, carved pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns, pumpkin bread and cakes...

And we can use pumpkins for decoration.

I'll show you how to draw a Halloween pumpkin with Gimp. Gimp, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, is raster graphics editor and we can download it for free here.

Let's make our pumpkin

We'll start with a shape of a pumpkin. We do that with placing a few points.

We are going to use a Paths tool and this is how it looks like.

If we want to place points Paths tool must be in design mode.

If we want to drag the line between points Paths tool must be in edit mode.

Now we press the line and drag it to the left or right to get a shape of a pumpkin.

When we are pleased with our pumpkin's shape, we press Selection from Path and Stroke path to color the line. I used color #f57d41.

And to color the whole pumpkin we just go to Edit - Fill with FG color. I used color #f57d41.

Now we continue with coloring the lines of a pumpkin. It is the same all the time:

- place two points

- drag the line to shape it

- color the line

I used color #ba4c16.

The lines are drawn and colored.

Here we are drawing and coloring the top of a pumpkin.

For background I used color #795e27, and for the lines inside I used color #4d3a10.

For the top I used colors #f1d96a and #f4e69d. I made two lines.

Then we start with eyes.

For the lines I used color #f1d96a and to fill half of an eye I used color #f4e69d.

To fill the other half of an eye I used color #91380d.

This is pumpkin's nose. I used colors #f1d96a and #f4e69d for the lines and color #91380d to fill the nose.

And here are mouth with teeth.

For the first line I used color #f1d96a.

For the second line I used color #f4e69d. To fill the mouth I used color #91380d.

Our pumpkin is almost done.

Just one more thing. We can have it on a white or any other background color or we can make the background transparent.

To make it transparent, we choose Free Select Tool, it looks like this.

We make little points around our pumpkin. At the end we just click the first point we made to connect the first and the last point. With these points we selected object from background.

We must be careful, because if we accidentally click twice instread of once, we will have to start all over again.

Then we go to Layer - Transparency - Add Alpha Chanell.

Then Select - Invert. And at the end just Delete.

And this is the picture we must get, pumpkin and in the background black and gray little squares. This is our transparency.

Done.

And this is our Halloween pumpkin. I hope you had fun making it.
