Human Anatomy: Design Workflow
Learn to draw human anatomy as studied at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Video-tutorial showing the easy way, step by step to be able to design proportionally the human figure from scratch. We will use the 8 heads tall figure standard and we'll analyze the front and side view.
Let's start dividing the human figure in 8 modules. Let's consider the upper half first.
Each lesson will show a part of the whole human structure. I will upload time-lapse video to show you the whole building process.
And don't forget to have fun!

VIDEO: Human skeleton upper half
FRONT VIEW
In this time-lapse video you will learn the basic steps to subdivide the human body (frontal view and upper half) as taught at the Academy of Fine Arts.
In the following videos we will analyze each module from scratch to bone, to muscle, to shade.
I suggest you to practice the structure each day for a couple of times. Then you will start to remember the steps and measurements needed.
The whole human body is divided by 8 modules.
Let's start considering the upper half (first 4 modules):
1st MODULE: HEAD
2nd MODULE: CHIN TO NIPPLE (+SHOULDER)
3rd MODULE: NIPPLE TO BELLY (+ARMS)
4th MODULE: BELLY TO PELVIC AREA (+HANDS)

VIDEO: 1st MODULE (HEAD)
From scratch to the human head (FRONT VIEW)
The first video will show you how to divide the first module representing the head of the human body.
The second video will show you how to build a human face (male) on top of a skull and how to work on the shading process, finalizing with digital ink.
STEP 1: Draw a vertical segment and divide it by three and by four.
STEP 2: Draw a circle fitting in the upper two third of the segment and draw another one fitting the lower half. You should now have a bigger circle on top and a smaller one on the bottom, intersecting each other.
STEP 3: The nose zone will be standing within the intersection of the circles. The eye level is just above the lower circle.
STEP 4: The teeth line and mouth-line will be drawn between the chin and the end of the nose.
STEP 5: The ears starts at eyebrow level and ends at nostril level.
STEP 6: The average neck thickness can be found following a virtual vertical line starting from the most external ends of the eyes.
STEP 7: Draw eyeballs like spheres entangled in the eye hole. Then draw the eyelids on top following the natural curve of the spherical eye form.
STEP 8: Choose a light spot and try to imagine how the light will affect on the surface of the face. You can help yourself building up the shadow areas.
STEP 9: Start a new layer for the inking process and try to draw smooth lines with your brush/digital brush. Fill the areas you previously selected as shadows and you should get a result similar to what I achieved in my video.
Remember: practice makes perfect (almost!), so keep drawing!

VIDEO: 2nd-4th MODULES (TORSO-ARMS-PELVIS)
Build up the upper half of the human body (FRONT VIEW)
1st VIDEO: the time lapse video will continue the building process of the human body on modules 2,3 and 4.
You will learn how to build the chest, the arms (to the wrist) and the pelvic area.
In this section of the lesson we will use a new measurement: 5/6 of the head (we will call it F as FACE)
This will help us find a few key points in the human structure.
2nd VIDEO: this video will show you how to draw the rib-cage of the human body (frontal view)
3rd VIDEO: this video will show you how to draw the main muscles of the torso.
