2012: NEW Books About Drawing

Ranked #1,985 in Arts & Design, #26,479 overall

Find out about NEW books to be published in 2012

This site lists BRAND NEW books about drawing and sketching due to be published in 2012 on a month by month basis and highlights major new books which I recommend.

It includes all formats - as hardback, paperback and ebook. It doesn't include every book. Instead it highlights those likely to be of most interest to artists and serious students of drawing.

Each book listed below highlights the type of format, nature of the book according to the publisher's description and the reception and reviews it has had to date.

The focus is on fine art and art instruction books about drawing and sketching for adults.

* It includes books designed specifically for pencils artists and those keeping sketchbooks / journals.
* It includes academic books about drawing
* It includes catalogues for exhibitions about drawings
* It excludes any reference to specialist books about cartooning, manga and drawing books for children.

Note that Amazon listings tend to carry over the ratings for hardbacks and paperbacks to the Kindle edition. High ratings do NOT equate to an excellent conversion of the printed book to ebook format. We're still waiting for Amazon to come up with a way recording people's assessments of the quality of the conversion.

January 2012: New Drawing Books

January sees the publication of a couple of books of fine art drawings by famous artists from the past plus sketches by a modern master. Plus a couple of art instruction books.

There are also a number of Drawing Mentor books - but these seem to be self-published as short books (similar to chapters in other books) and are by an artist I can't locate on the web so they're not listed here

RECOMMENDED: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain

The Definitive, 4th Edition - published April 2012

A 4th Edition of this extremely popular book by Betty Edwards has been announced - to be published in April 2012.

THIS BOOK IS CONSISTENTLY IN THE TOP THREE BESTSELLING BOOKS ABOUT DRAWING ON AMAZON
1626 days in the top 100 books (Arts & Photography) on Amazon
Amazon review: 4.4 out of 5 stars (238 customer reviews) | Like (12)
Goodreads: 4.02 out of 5 stars (1,971 ratings / 134 reviews)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - see my book review of the existing edition on my blog - here's a couple of short extracts

In my opinion, it's an excellent book for adults who haven't picked up a pencil to have a go at drawing in years. It's also very helpful for self-improvers who have already started to draw again but are finding they continue to have problems in drawing the object they see in front of them. Children may also find it interesting as it takes an entirely different approach to teaching people how to draw - but almost certainly will find some of the chapters a bit too advanced.

'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' has a unique approach which is accessible (for the most part), memorable and gets good results. It doesn't teach everything about drawing but it has got a lot of people a long way towards being better able to see and better able to draw. And as I said at the beginning it's also one of the only two books I recommend to adults who want to learn how to draw from the beginning.

BUT - see 4TH EDITION to be published in April 2012 below

-an informative section that addresses recent research linking early childhood "scribbling" to later language development and the importance of parental encouragement of this activity;
-and new reproductions of master drawings throughout

RECOMMENDED: The Visual Language of Drawing

Lessons on the Art of Seeing

I've heard so many good things over the years about the Art students League that I'll definitely be ordering this book when it's published - or maybe even before!

The Visual Language of Drawing: Lessons on the Art of Seeing

Amazon Price: $18.26 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now
List Price: $27.95

Hardcover: 240 pages
Publisher: Sterling (July 3, 2012)

Product Description: Featuring the insights of 15 current and former Art Students League instructors, this stunning volume reassesses the art of drawing not as a technique, but as the essential grammar of all visual thinking. In an illuminating introductory essay, James Lancel McElhinney punctures the myth that learning to draw is something for experts only, and presents methods for making, appreciating, and teaching drawing. The 15 contributors then offer a broad range of stylistic approaches and methodologies, accompanied by examples of their own and their students' artwork. A final section of basic exercises, along with information on materials, techniques, and resources, completes this inspirational study.

Images for books yet to be published are difficult. However people can take a look at the "look inside" options if these have been made available by the publishers of new drawing books. It's nearly as good as having a flick through a book in a book shop
