Draw Your Own Anime Manga Character

This tutorial are separated into 3 sections:

1. Basic anatomy : Learn how to draw the eyes , hands , head and hair

2. Practice by drawing your favourite character : I've put here among the popular animes , but you can try almost any character you want

3. Advance character design : whilst still under construction, this section will have the theory on how to create your own characters. I just get my hands on Manga Studio.A brief how I created this drawing using this software is available below.

You can skip this section if you're already skillful in drawing basic anatomy of your characters.

A Step by step tutorial from Crysa on deviantart on how to draw anime bangs.

Her tutorial is in two parts , organized bangs and unorganized bangs. She also touch upon the issue that I have been wondering all along: What will happen when the bangs covers the eyes ? Should it be completely covered? or just let a peek of the eyes shown? All the answers are here in her tutorial.

Each drawing you complete , you will learn something new from it and you can incorporate the style you haver learnt into your own drawings

Theory and application of manga and character design.

Applying colors to your character can be a headache. ~Sai-Manga-Tuts from deviantart explains how to apply color theory to make your illustrations have that professional feel to it.

Color Theory: And It's Application to Character Design

This is my first time of using the manga studio. At first I was apprehensive because I already have photoshop and I've seen many tutorials on creating manga in photoshop before.

But If you really want to create a manga , this is definitely the software to buy because of this 3 reasons:

1. It has the specific library of brush and pens that are used in real manga creation. It even detects wacom pen pressure which I was not aware of before , or else I would've bought it sooner.

2. It has tones that are used in the real manga.

3. The page layout , panels and workflow are true and follows to the manga workflow.

I did a quick ten minute read through of the help file, and started with the pencil sketch first.

I love the pencil tool since in photoshop , I had difficulties to find a brush that really simulates the pencil.In photoshop, I just don't have the time to tweak it.



There is a panel for layers where you can create various layers for different kind of pen strokes. My first layer is of course the pencil sketch.

I had some trouble inking because it was my first time doing so. I find the Correction option in the pen tool option is really useful as it tweaks minor jitters that i made while drawing lines using my wacom.

You can see that the whole head are done with the correction option on. The collar however is done without the help of the correction option thus its a little wiggly and jittery.

The tones are the fun part in manga studio.Hadn't had the chance to try it all yet, plus I suspect my workflow for inserting the tones are not the correct one.

I didn't read through the help file properly, so I went with my instinct and tried to make a selection with the lasso tool.Then I select the tones from the folder.Drag and drop.Voila.

So here is my first attempt of the manga studio.Hope It'll fare better next time.
