Who is Dr. Ben Carson: An American Hero

Dr. Ben Carson: Presidential Medal of Freedom Award Winner

At the start of each school year my husband reads a biography of Dr. Ben Carson to his 5th students.

The kids are taken on a journey of a young Ben Carson who was at the bottom of the barrel in his class. He was nicknamed "the class dummy". Coupled with a terrible temper, this was not a recipe for success. Through the help of a strong mother with a 3rd grade education, his attitude changed.

Sonya Carson required Ben and his brother Curtis, to read two books a week and complete a book report to boot. She told Ben to memorize his times tables. He did, through the 12's.

He also got glasses which focused his entire world. He became a voracious reader.

So how did he do this go from "class dummy", to Yale, and then on to John Hopkins?

Today he is the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins hospital.

From his book, Think Big- My husband's students memorize Dr. Carson's acronym for personal success.

T-Talent: We are all born with it.
H- honesty: Live it!
I-insight: Look for new ways to see life
N-nice: treat people with kindness and respect
K-knowledge: Get an education

B- books: Read, Read, Read!
I-indepth: Dig deeper into your passion.
G-God: Spirituality in the creator

We were privileged to hear Dr. Carson speak at a fund raiser. He is a gentle man with a powerful message.

What an incredible role model for today's youth and for any adult who wants more out of life.

I think Dr. Carson is a wonderful man and a great role model for boys and young men today. His humility, wisdom, generosity, and godly example speak volumes about his integrity. I've read all of his books, seen his documentary, read his biography at our afterschool program to elementary students, and have most recently seen the nicely done TNT movie. We sure need many more strong, yet meek, men like Dr. Carson.

I heard Dr. Carson speak at Star Commonwealth in Albion, Michigan several years ago. He was the keynote speaker at Founder's Day. What an excellent speech! I was able to met him and bought his book - Think Big. I've also seen him on TV medical documentaries. He is very soft spoken and down to earth. A true American hero and an inspiration to all.
