Dr. Bronner's soaps have spread by quality and word of mouth alone into virtually every health food store in the country. Unsolicited articles raving about the soaps have appeared in magazines and newspapers as diverse as Natural Health, Outdoor Gear, Vogue, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, Parenting and New Age.

Emanuel H Bronner was born on February 1, 1908 and died, aged 91 on March 7, 1997. Generally regarded as eccentric, he was the producer of Dr Bronners Castile Soap. The Castile Soap is a concentrated liquid famed for the vast amount of lather produced from a few drops and the even vaster amount of tiny text on the packaging.

Dr Bronner started his business at home, making his products by hand.

The product labels are crowded with Bronner's personal philosophy statements that he called "All-One-God-Faith" and the "Moral ABCs". Many of Bronner's sources were from the Jewish and Christian faiths, such as the Shema and the Beatitudes. Other sayings were sourced from poets, including Rudyard Kipling. His quotes and sayings became famous for their idiosyncratic style, as he included hyphens to join long strings of words. His use of exclamation marks was also very liberal.

Bronner was arrested in 1947, while promoting his "Moral ABCs" at the University of Chicago. A commital to a Mental Hospital in Elgin, Illinois followed. He escaped after being subjected to electric shock treatment.

Following several moves, Dr Bronner settled in Escondido, California, where eventually his home-made soap operation was moved into a small factory.

By the time of Bronner's death in 1997, the factory was producing over one million bottles of soap and other products a year, but was still not mechanized. The operation has been the subject of many published articles and has supported many charities.

After Bronner's death, his family continued the business. They have declared that the original labels written by Bronner will not change except when required by government regulations.
