Dare to Dream Theatre

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band comprising James LaBrie, John Petrucci, Jordan Rudess, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy.

Dream Theater was formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty" by Petrucci, Myung, and Portnoy, while they were attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston, before dropping out to help support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with LaBrie and Rudess. Dream Theater has become one of the most commercially successful progressive rock bands since the height of the genre in the mid-1970s, despite being relatively unknown in mainstream rock circles. Although the band has had a few successful hits (notably 'Pull Me Under' in the early 1990s, which had extensive MTV rotation), it has mostly stayed underground for its career, feeding off support from fans.

The band is well known for the technical proficiency of its instrumentalists, who have won many awards from music instruction magazines. Dream Theater's members have collaborated with many other notable musicians. Guitarist John Petrucci was named as the third player on the G3 tour six times, more than any other invited guitarist, following in the footsteps of Eric Johnson, Robert Fripp, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Who Rocks Harder? Rush or Dream Theater?

Both bands play progressive hard rock that's heavy on musicality, but also rife with strong hooks and melody. And both deliver live with a precision and chemistry that's nearly unparalleled. Clearly, there are lots of people out there that are diehard fans of both%u2026 Well, now you have to choose.

Any band with John Petrucci at the helm :)

Jonathan says:

Very hard decision to pick... Both bands are amazing but I have to go with dream theater... Although Neil pert is beast, I just think DT's guitarist, drummer, and bassist out do rush... Not to say geddy isn't good at singing and bass, but ive been exposed to DT first which makes ne love them slightly more then rush...

gbrettmiller says:

Some of my friends may disown me for this, but my vote goes to Dream Theater. Their lyrics aren't nearly as meaningful as those of Neil Peart, but musically I just have to give them the edge.

JAG says:

im gonna have to say dt wins this one. comparing the individual members of each band to their counterpart in the other, dt wins.

Rush

Jerry says:

This is a hard one!! Both have awesome drummers but Rush has the most awesome bassist!! They are both pretty tight but i like rush better ,especially 74-80 great stuff!

I remember the first Dream Theater song I heard. That was As I am. Then, my friend showed me a Dream theater Budokan DVD Concert. Since that, I love Dream theater so much. Especially John Myung. He has a mysterious personality.

I've created lens about John Myung's basses. Check it out!

I have been having a scandelous love affair with DT for about the last, oh, let's say, half a year. I really got into their concept album "Metropolis, part 2" first, I thought that the whole album was an amazing collection of so many things. Right now, however, I've been hitting their latest album really hard, notable the "In the Presence of Enemies" songs. I am absolutely obsessed with these two songs. I've been listening to them several times a day, I've been trying to learn parts from them on the guitar, and have generally been dissecting the song mentally. It's really cool stuff. I love the whole band. They're just fantastic musicians. It'd be cool to see some more innovation on this site for such a cool band.
