Dream Trip #1: India
Ranked #3,847 in Travel & Places, #116,812 overall
India is a land of beauty
Where will I go? All over, I hope. There are so many places to see in India, and I will only touch on some here. But you can research your favorites too with the links I have here.
Have you been to India? Would you like to go? Maybe reading this lens will inspire you to visit this country someday.
And if you already want to go to India, add your favorites at the end of this lens as part of your comments.
This introduction photo includes a piece of mirrorwork from India. I find that many Indians love bright colors and sparkly things. I do too!
India is a country with many languages, customs, and celebrations. It's a wonderful place to visit.
The photo here is clipped from a bigger photo taken by Kevin Rosseel on Morguefile, which is a free photo site I really like.

What are the most famous places in India?
It depends on who you ask.
I would say these are my favorites - - plus they are famous, too.#1: Delhi (and New Delhi)
#2. Agra (Home of the Taj Mahal)
#3. Goa (fabulous beach destination)
#4. Jaipur
#5. Kerala, and
#6. Mumbai (Bombay)
#7. Pushkar
The hill stations of India used to be more famous than they are now. A few examples of these are Mussoorie, Simla, Nainital, Kulu, and Darjeeling. They are still there. They are high altitude towns where people used to go to escape the heat. I would definitely look into a trip North especially if you are there in the summer. I don't recommend traveling to India in the summer. Try Winter or even the Fall.
It's too bad that Kashmir is still experiencing unrest. It is not the safest place to visit. Just saying. But it is beautiful. I would not recommend going there until it is safer. Will I go there? It all depends.
There are MANY more excellent destinations to visit in India. These are some I am familiar with. This photo is from the excellent Microsoft Images site for users of Microsoft Word. Try it out for your next photo!
Here is another photo of the Taj Mahal.
The Taj is one of the most spectacular places to visit in the whole world.
The Taj is located in Agra, India.
It is wonderful to visit this Heritage Site by night or by day.
The Taj Mahal means "Crown Building" according to some historians. It was built as a monument to Arjumand Banu Begum, favorite wife of Shah Jehan.
I think I would visit this again if I can.
This beautiful photo is from the Microsoft Clipart pages.
India is full of wonderful surprises.
You can see the past and present, ultra-modern and ultra-fashionable fashions, plus historical and ancient places, all in the same trip.
Of course, a new Tour Guide book could be most helpful.
Here are some from Amazon.
Here are a sight you may see on your trip.
I really liked this photo.
Here is a photo of some camels. How pretty it is!
It reminds me of the Camel Fair at Pushkar in Rajasthan. This fair is held once a year. Many tourists like it. You can get there any way, but going by train used to be popular. You can buy some neat things there, like camel seats. Contests are held, like camel races and more. Tourists are most welcome at this Fair.
I might visit the Pushkar Camel Fair again if I have time.
This romantic photo is from the Microsoft Clipart pages.
This is a picture of wedding singers.
I (or you...) may see a wedding while vacationing in India.
Many weddings are still done in the traditional way in India. They are a feast for the eyes and senses.
Married couples dress in beautiful traditional dress and it is a most festive time for all.
I love the beautiful saris in all colors in this photo, which is from the photographer Nasirkan at the Morguefile site.
When I go, I will for sure buy some souvenirs.
Here are some on Ebay.
#1. Carved wood from Kashmir.
#2. Jewelry and precious stones from old Delhi
#3. Camel seats from Pushkar
#4. Spices
#5. Wonderful incense and perfume
#6. Fabulous saris and handmade clothing
#7. Awesome copper pieces
#8. Beautiful clothing and saris
#9. Shoes, purses, and much more.
I like both old and new things. So I would be most tempted to buy something old as well as something new.
And here are some Indian items on Amazon.
Amazon picks these.
This is the Jal Mahal in Jaipur during the daytime.
It was a Maharaja's palace.
This beautiful palace is now open to visitors. The Palace on Wheels makes a stop here. There is a link to this famous train below on this lens.
This awesome photo is from the Microsoft Clipart pages.
This is a fun video.
It has photos AND Indian music in it.
This is a neat video by famous photographer Tom Carter. I like it!
Here are some great links!
They are useful to know if you plan a trip to India.
- The Howard Hillman Wonders of India page
- Howard Hillman says to visit the Taj at night. Read about his visit here. I like this website too.
- Janpath in Delhi - from Wikipedia
- Janpath is one of the most fun places to shop in New Delhi. This page talks about this road in New Delhi.
- Sunaina Suneja Designs
- Sunaina has a cute shop in Hauz Khas Village. She sells beautiful Indian fashions. Tell her Betsy sent you!
- The Sangam Girl Scout world center
- Are you wanting to visit Sangam? Make sure to arrange your visit well in advance. Girl Scouts and Girl Scout groups are welcome here. You can also help with service projects during your stay.
- The E-Diplomat pages
- US Citizens: check out this site to find out local customs, what you should wear while in India, and more. It is the Global Portal for Diplomats. Everyone knows that diplomats know the real scoop.
- The U.S. Embassy Site
- Always useful. Check here before you go. I will. Plus there are links to emergency services here for U.S. citizens.
- The Palace on Wheels luxury train
- This is a wonderful experience, I have heard. It is well worth the money. For me, I need to win the lottery to go! But seriously, if you go let me now about it. It looks fabulous.

More places to visit

2. The Qutab Minar
3. Gandhi's Tomb
4. The Connaught Circus area
5. The Red Fort
6. Sangam, the Girl Scout World Center
7. The Pink Palace in Jaipur
8. Puna
9. Gopalpur-on-Sea
10. Mahabalipuram
11. Gandhi Smriti
12. Kerala
This drawing of a lotus flower is from the free Clker site.
It is fun to get a pedicab in Indian cities.
They are cheaper than cabs.
You can look forward to a slightly bumpy, but sometimes surprisingly fun trip when you take one of these vehicles in an Indian city.
India does not have the orderly traffic that U.S. visitors are used to. Be prepared for some jolts and close calls. But drivers here are well used to getting around in Indian cities, so being driven is the best way to go.
I hope to ride one of these if I am lucky enough to take this trip.

This is a lens for the RocketMoms group.
And I have another lens listed from a fellow RocketMom below.
Too bad RocketMoms is no longer a group here. But maybe a similar group will be here later.
This lens is for RocketMoms Fall Session 2011: Challenge #6: Dream Vacation.
I have also listed a lens from RocketMoms about cruising the Atlantic. I would love to do that too!
