Dream Interpretation
Dream interpretation has been around for a long time; from the ancient Greeks and Egyptians to more modern psychological theories society has been trying to determine the meanings behind dreams.
Dating back to ancient times, the Greeks and Egyptians believed that dreams were supernatural and only individuals with "certain powers" could decipher the meanings. The Greeks tried to use dreams to cure their sick, while the Egyptians believed that dreams came from God and used priest to interpret them.

The Interpretation of Dreams by Sigmund Freud
More recently psychology has been used to interpret dreams. Sigmund Freud believed that dreams were a visual representation of wish-fulfilment which is documented in, The Interpretation of Dreams, which was published in 1899.
Freud believed that dreams occurred after humans experienced a desire for an object or idea during that day. Children's dreams reflected exactly what they desired without the need to mask it with symbolism, while adults' dreams become distorted. This happens when the dream is lost in imagery and symbolism which makes the dream interpretation much harder.
Freud's theory takes into account the ego and super-ego and explains how the unconscious mind is able to hold desires that never make it to the conscious mind, this results in them emerging as dreams. The unconscious mind does not necessarily want the conscious mind to know its true desires; the dreams' original content is hidden by symbols and other images.

Modern Dream Interpretation
During the 1950's after conducting years of research, Calvin S. Hall published his dream research where he felt that dreams were a collection of thoughts or just one which had occurred during sleep. The person's perceptions of these thoughts were represented as a dream during sleep.
During the 1970's Ann Faraday, published a number of books about dream interpretation and how to interpret your own dreams. Faraday believed that dreams were served as warnings of future events.
After having a strange or bizarre dream, or dreams which are reoccurring, people continue to seek meanings to their dreams. Often people feel that their dreams have meanings and often find guidance in this meaning.
