DreamHost Shared Web Site Hosting Overview

DreamHost is a Debian Linux-powered provider, specializing in very flexible, affordable Shared Web Site Hosting.

They are a solid provider that goes above and beyond to assure their customers have an outstanding, unique experience. They definitely march to the beat of their own drummer.

In addition to Shared Web Site Hosting, DreamHost also offers their own unique version of a Virtual Private Server, scalable in real-time; however, one must be "specially invited" to share in the joy.

As well, DreamHost also offers traditional Dedicated Servers through Hosting.com, which you do not need to be invited to.

DreamHost is an ICANN-accredited domain registrar. However, one is limited only to 4 TLD's (dot-com, net, org & info). They are expensive to register a domain name with at $9.95 per domain, so I would suggest using Viking Communication Technologies as your domain registrar.

DreamHost has a very unique way of saying "Thank You" to their customers by increasing one's hosting plan's monthly storage usage allocation by an additional 2 Gigabytes per week, and monthly bandwidth usage allocation by 40 Gigabytes per week.

Technical support is high quality and understanding, they do not treat you like a dummy. e-Mail support is available 24/7 and boasts one of the quickest response times in the industry. They provide a good FAQ, an extensive Online Wiki and an active Discussion Forum for us self-service types.

If you find you're having trouble understanding any of the terms used in their product and service offerings, DreamHost provides a comprehensive glossary with which to educate yourself.

If you really need to speak with a person, telephone support can be purchased. The interesting thing about their telephone support is that you get to tell them when to call YOU back!

DreamHost offers an outstanding array of software, applications and language support, with great flexibility in regard to what you run on your account, and especially in regard to 3rd party scripts. I've had outstanding luck running my own PHP scripts!

DreamHost's Web Based Account Control Panel is fast, unique, pleasant, intuitive and secure. All aspects of account and domain management is performed through the online web interface, no cPanel.

DreamHost offers the industry's longest trial period, a 97-day Money-back Guarantee.

If you have questions in regard to any part of their products and services, feel free to e-Mail Them Here.

DreamHost Shared Web Site Hosting Thoughts

I use DreamHost's service primarily for an inexpensive way of testing automated PHP scripts as well as software development, as they provide concurrent versioning systems (for when I'm feeling collaborative), crontab access and full UNIX shell access.

I also have a hobby music and video content site, as well as a software download site that I host with DreamHost. I've never had to worry about going over my bandwidth and disk space allocations.

At first, I had misgivings about the security and performance of their servers because of some of the services and activities that are allowed.

Those worries have been quelled as I've learned that they've got the horsepower to run these sorts of CPU-, disk I/O- & bandwidth-intensive services, outstanding network monitoring and security, as well as frequent, fine-grained system backups.

As you can see, DreamHost allows activities on their servers that most other providers will not, such as chat server activity and full crontab access and audio/video streaming. However, if one is stupid greedy with one's use of cron, they will kill your processes, so watch your CPU usage and keep it under the radar, as it were, and they're fine with it.

I've been very happy with their service and will continue using them for a very long time.

See If DreamHost Is Right For You

As I've mentioned before, DreamHost has a very active Discussion Forum for members and non-members alike. They also have an outstanding Online Wiki, as well as a Server Status page to keep you apprised of their network and server status and conditions.

I find it humorous, albeit unfortunate and misguided, that many users of Shared Web Site Hosting services expect it to act like a Virtual Dedicated Server or Dedicated server, as you can see in some of the posts.

Anyway, this is here for you to make up your own mind...
