You've maybe heard about lucid dreaming. But just what is a lucid dream and, once you've found out what it is, would you want some of your dreams to be lucid ones?
In a nutshell, a lucid dream is one where you are aware that you're dreaming whilst you're actually in the dream.
Initially, this may sound a kind of odd position to be in. Although dreams can sometimes appear quite real - especially if they turn nasty on you in the form of nightmares - you usually know that it's just a dream. And once you've woken up, chances are that you have little or no recollection of what you were dreaming about.
Lucid dreaming is something we may have done as a child but, like many childhood skills, we have forgotten the process as we get older.
Whilst no-one is entirely sure why we dream, it is generally thought that the average adult has between 4 and 6 dreams most every night. Quite surprising, isn't it?
The art of lucid dreaming is to start taking control of those dreams and directing their focus. Not to mention remembering what you actually dreamed about.
There are two main ways to start having a lucid dream:

This book goes far beyond the confines of pop dream psychology, establishing a scientifically researched framework for using lucid dreaming--that is, consciously influencing the outcome of your dreams. Based on Dr. Stephen LaBerge's extensive laboratory work at Stanford University mapping mind/body relationships during the dream state, as well as the teachings of Tibetan dream yogis and the work of other scientists, including German psycholgist Paul Tholey, this practical workbook will show you how to use your dreams to: Solve problems; Gain greater confidence; improve creativity, and more.
Like most hobbies, learning how to lucid dream is just the first stage.A lucid dream is a dream in which the person is aware that he or she is dreaming while the dream is in progress, also known as a conscious dream. When the dreamer is lucid, he or she can actively participate in the dream environment without any of the inhibitions or limitations that otherwise would feel natural to persons who incorrectly believe they are in the "real" waking world. Lucid dreams can be extremely real and vivid depending on a person's level of self-awareness during the lucid dream.Lucid Dreaming FAQ LaBerge, S. & Levitan, L. (2004). Version 2.3
A lucid dream can begin in one of two ways. A dream-initiated lucid dream (DILD) starts as a normal dream, and the dreamer eventually concludes that he or she is dreaming, while a wake-initiated lucid dream (WILD) occurs when the dreamer goes from a normal waking state directly into a dream state with no apparent lapse in consciousness.
Lucid dreaming has been researched scientifically, and its existence is well established.
Scientists such as Allan Hobson, with his neurophysiological approach to dream research, have helped to push the understanding of lucid dreaming into a less speculative realm.

Interesting. On a couple of occssions I have had a bad dream, realized it was just a bad dream and tried to determine how to stop what was happening; I usually end up waking up but it IS a better feeling once you confront it while still dreaming. Posted January 20, 2008 |
