How Do Dreams Correlate With Our Vision and Motivation?

Ranked #8,245 in Healthy Living, #138,756 overall

For dreams to occur, a person who have a good sleep needs to undergo four (4) cycles - and these are stage one to three of non - rapid eye movement and a rapid eye movement. Stage N1 is referred to drowsy sleep. The person is groggy but still aware on his environment. In phase N2, muscle tone has been decreased and person losses environmental consciousness while in stage N3, parasomnias can probably occur. Focusing on rapid - eye movement, in this phase, the person is more likely to experience dreaming and its scenario is vivid until they are awake. They also feel more decrease in muscle tone or even temporary paralysis enough to protect themselves from self - inflicted injury caused by acting out physically on those scenes coming from their vivid dreams.

Lots of us have nightmares or even wonderful dreams while most of us find meaning to what we have been experienced or scenes that encountered in those said dreams. With this information, do we ever wonder how we interpret those dreams?

Through passing years, dream interpretations have been debating by many. This was started when Carl Jung - a theorist of personality opposed on Sigmund Freud's concept in collecting, associating and interpreting one's dream - for basically, his interpretation would be possibly became a perception of the said person involved. And they believe that whatever perceives or think by individual, it is more likely to happen on them due to law of attraction. However, Jung and Freud agreed on one thing, that dream is a representation of person's unfulfilled wishes.

But how do we interpret dreams and what is its significance to us? Based on the above mentioned theorist, dreams are delineated through the use of concept of conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind.

Before we go on, let's determine first the three (3) mentioned categories of level of consciousness.

Conscious mind

1.Conscious mind - based on the iceberg model represented by Sigmund Freud, conscious level is only a tip of an iceberg. It is where awareness, human's perception and thinking process occurs. We pay attention to the details given by people who are talking to us or even keen observation of our environment. However, some say that it occupies the large part of person's current awareness.

Subconscious mind

2.Subconscious mind - It is well composed of memories and stored knowledge. In the model, it is located on the level of the water on where it sometimes higher or level than the arranged line. It only means that in preconscious level, we are still aware on our surrounding and can perceived information but we are not paying attention to it. However, just like what it depicted on the picture, if the water is high, the subconscious level submerged. To interpret this, if the person encountered emotional problem or even anxious situation, he repressed it and submerged on subconscious mind, hence retrieval of information is really difficult. Always bear in mind that repressed memory needs lots of help in order for an individual to remember or recall it. On the other hand, if the water is in low level than the arranged line, subconscious components such as memory and stored knowledge can bring back to conscious mind. All the person need is to pay further attention with the details. For application, when an individual encountered problem or situation that is difficult to accept, if he faced it accordingly with self - awareness, he can properly resolved some encountered dilemmas and can still recall necessary information from subconscious mind. Moreover, lots of defense mechanisms can be found on subconscious mind. This is situated to protect one's "ego", hence maintaining reality testing.

Unconscious mind

3.Unconscious mind - Fears, violent and irrational motives, selfish needs, shameful experience and so forth are located. Experts stated that these are the things we somehow knew before but already forgotten due to various causes - it can be external or internal factors. Some content are out of reach by the conscious mind. Freudian theory revealed that most behaviour is driven directly from this level. It is where we have no control and considered as a largest part of iceberg that submerged in deep level of water. We cannot be able to reach it no matter what happened - for if it going to correlate with Johari's window; it stated that this is unknown to person and unknown to others.

The importance of dreams

So what's the importance of this, In order for you to have a dream, you must reach the rapid eye movement stage. And this phase is dealing with subconscious and conscious mind. For further understanding, example will be given. An employee who encountered difficulties in working area like being misjudged by employer, he probably has defense mechanism. It's either he supressed it or compensate by means of repression. He would opt to do this just to protect the ego (reality testing). When he goes to sleep, apparently, subconscious, as well as unconscious mind will rule out. Since he repressed the problem, through defense mechanism, preconscious mind will try to bring it back to his dreams wanting to fulfill some actions done during stressful events. Remember that dreams are unfulfilled wishes. In this discussion, let's include the theory of Carl Jung. For recap, during the anxious event, the person is misjudged by employer and he did not do anything. In his dream, a flashback will occur and same scenario will be depicted except for the presence of the persona, shadow, the anima, the divine child, and the likes. The anima reflects as an individual's female aspect and animus is the male one. So, during the dream scenario (let's say the boss is nagging at him), the person is either fight (revealing masculine aspect) or became tamed (maintain feminist behaviour). The persona is a representation of "you" during waking hours. So it is more likely a mask that assume the role of "self". It could be a bird or another employee, as long as you feel that this "person" in dream is still you.

The shadow is the repressed memories or even personality of you. It could be a weakness or an anger and represents as a killer or something that scares you. This are the things that you intend to hide. Some experts said that you must face and accept it because it is for your own good. While on the other hand, Divine Child is a reflection of your true and genuine self. It only symbolizes innocence or being helpless, however, it opts to represents aspiration and reveal full potential. All of these will result in one thing - "self - awareness". They stated that once you accept those images in your dream as well as understand them heartily, you will now have a capability to be conscious in your behaviour. Awareness in attitude will now serves as starting point to change it in a more positive way. Using the same example given above, a person who has been nagged by the employer and dream of it may now be aware on his behaviour or even accept his fault. By this, he now creates a good vision and this will serves as a motivation. Always bear in mind that motivation comes into two factors - the internal and external aspect. And in order for a person to achieve his goal, a positive outlook is necessary and this is encompassed on internal motivation.
