Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine..
Opening scene from a 40s musical starring Betty Hutton.
"Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
A girl's best friend
If I didn't have my sewing machine
I'd a come to no good end
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And wheel the wheel by day
So by night I feel so weary that I never get out to play
Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
A friend in need
If I didn't having my sewing machine
A wicked life I'd lead
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And dream about romance
So by night I feel so weary that I never get out to dance
Ohhh the sewing machine, the sewing machine
Me pride and joy
If I didn't having me sewing machine
I'd a married James McCoy
But a bobbin a bobbin and peddle a peddle
And that's the end of Jim
'Cause by night I get so weary I don't even look good to him "
I made these dresses for my grand daughters...
I started with an off the rack pattern, then did some alterations on it so that they would fit well. The pattern sizing needed to be a bit longer and a bit slender. This was easy to adjust by using the 'finished measurements' on the pattern package and the 'finished measurements' that I needed, then adjusting the pattern pieces a little bit to ensure that the finished project would be tailored for each of them.In the photo (top right) You will see the back of the yellow dress and the front of the red dress. Those were the favorite colors of each of the girls when I made these in Spring of 2007.

The pattern included a border around the bottom of the hemline. I opted to exclude that part, so, I needed to add a few more inches to each of the lengths of the dresses.Another adjustment I decided on was the belt with the fabric covered button. The original pattern did not include these details.
Another change I made was to the back of the dress. Originally there was not a slit on the back of the neckline. I actually decided to do this after they were nearly finished...so I needed to cut the fabric, sew each side 'inside of the lining', and then attach the ribbon so that they could be tied in a bow to close them after they were put on.
Your New Sewing Machine
Will your machine be simple or an electronic genious?
Equipment
With the right machine for the job, you will have much joy and great times creating crafts, clothing, or anything your heart desires.I love my machine and have made gifts for my grand daughters on it. I have created dresses, blankets for their dolls (a bit of quilting), and I have created dozens of other gifts.
Whatever you desire to sew, having the right tools for the project is going to give you more time to be inspired and creative.

Thread is another staple that you will need to have on hand. Finding your threads at auction can save you time and money.
One great tip to remember is that the weight of threads are different and you will want to have the right color as well as the right weight for your project.
