Creating the Ultimate Sewing Room

Be Unique! No 2 sewing rooms are alike.

If you are lucky enough to have a room in your home set aside just for you and your craft, be thankful! Right now, as I am typing this, countless men and women all over the world are sobbing over their dining room table. They are cursing at the wobbly leg under their miniature cutting mat and the bins and bins of fabric stash that take up all of their closet space only to leave their clothing in piles on a chair. Their spouses are wondering if they will ever get to serve another Thanksgiving dinner at Grandma's antique table and screaming bloody murder when their poor little toe finds a straight pin in the carpet. Yes, if you own a sewing machine you know that a room to yourself is a dream come true. For some, a coat closet would be better than what they have now.

There are so many options when designing your dream sewing room. Each person should choose options to best fit their needs. Some people like quilting while others machine embroider. Then there are those that like to make clothing, dolls, etc.. You may have a need for something in your sewing room that the next person doesn't. Another important factor will be the size of your room. And anyone who sews knows, the bigger - the better!

Sewing Room Storage

Storage is one of the most important factors in your sewing space. If you are anything like me, you have huge stashes of fabric, spools and spools of thread, a gajillion tools and so much more that needs to fit into your space. The most important part of storage is having a place for everything and everything in its place. Just because you have your own space doesn't mean you don't have to clean up after yourself! Below, you will find some neat items for large storage such as fabric. Remember, fabric is best stored in airtight containers so that it doesn't collect dust and smells.

Other Sewing Room Must Haves..

There are a few other essentials that you will NEED if you are going to have a dream sewing room. Here's my list.
  1. Hard floors- Carpeting hides pins and needles. There's nothing worse than a pin or needle hiding in your foot! Enough said!
  2. A large table or counter- Sewers cut. There's not really an exception to this rule except for some machine embroidery.(and who ONLY machine embroiders?) I have found that my 68" cutting table is more than sufficient for my needs. It does take up precious space that some may not have though. I couldn't lay a king size quilt out on it but the floor is good for this. Whether you have a freestanding cutting table or a built in counter top, a self healing cutting mat is your friend.
  3. Storage- Boy, can we collect craft STUFF! Fabric, tools, fasteners, trims, oh my! We'll get into this later.

Sewing Machines

Chances are if you don't know how to sew yet, you probably don't have a machine. Or maybe you're thinking of upgrading to a machine with different features. There are so many types of machines. How do you choose? I'll tell you. The first factor is your budget. We are talking about DREAM sewing spaces here so I am going to assume you have an unlimited budget. Ha! Yeah, right! The next factor in choosing a machine would be what you plan on sewing. You can find basic sewing machines and machines that cater to quilting or machine embroidery(my favorite!). Then there are sergers. Sergers finish and cut your fabric like the clothing you buy in the store. Take one of your knit shirts and flip it inside out. See those chain stitches? That is what a serger does. It makes your item all neat and tidy.
My newest baby is a Husqvarna Viking Designer SE. I recently added it along with my Designer 1. These machines are just fabulous! They have needle threaders, a gazillion stitches including the alphabet and even have a button that you push to cut your thread. They both sew and do machine embroidery and have automatic tension setters. No more fighting with big loops of thread! My sewing room wouldn't be complete without them.

One of My Favorite Tools in My Sewing Room

I had an a-ha moment one day when I was looking for something to push out the corners on the blankets that I make. After clipping the corners, I picked up my letter opener and wiggled the corners out nice and square. You do have to be careful that you don't poke through the fabric though.

I got my letter opener for $1 at an office supply sale. This one is much cuter though!

Sewing Tools

Must have tools in the sewing room

There are some tools that one just can not live without. For me personally, the first is good lighting. There is nothing worse than not knowing the true color of your thread or fabric.
The 2nd thing for me is my rotary cutter and cutting mat. This isn't necessary for patterns but when quilting or making straight cuts of any sort, this is the way to go. If you haven't switched over to a rotary cutting system yet- you don't know what you're missing. My all time favorite rotary cutter is by Fiscars. They have a spring loaded safety cover so that you don't have to remember to close it yourself. Believe me- use that safety! You don't want to reach for this blade. It's sharp! My favorite ruler for rotary cutting? It has to be my O'Lipfa lip edge ruler. I use it daily.
A fabulous pair of scissors are always required in the sewing room. My favorite are Fiscars but if you are sparing no expense, try a pair of Ginghers. My mother swore by them.

Iron or Press?

Which is it really?

One of the most important parts of sewing and having a very nice finished product is ironing. Quilters iron in between every piece. People who make clothing iron as they are putting their pattern together. If you aren't ironing, you aren't getting the crisp, clean lines that your product deserves.

Many good tips here! My mother's dream was her sewing room, but she didn't have much time to use it before illness overtook her. I've never been much of a seamstress, but your lens provides the needed helps for anyone wanting to learn. Great job!

I'm pretty much a straight stitch gal, I make cozybagz from my kitchen table, so being organized is essential. I love your a-ha moment with the letter opener and plan to borrow the idea, thanks.
